A year ago, adidas launched its latest 3D-printed running shoe, the 4DFWD. The new design was all about moving forward with each stride. It continues the forward momentum with the updated adidas 4DFWD 2 in 2022.

The 4DFWD is adidas‘ most advanced running shoe. It was designed to move runners in one direction – forward. Thanks to its bowtie-shaped lattice structure on the midsole, it transforms the vertical pressure during your stride into a horizontal force. This provides runners with a non-stop smooth forward transition while running.
As with the original, adidas evaluated many variations of the lattice structure. This, combined with its 18 years of athlete performance data, was used to create the optimum pattern and design of the lattice. On the 4DFWD 2, adidas has improved upon this, changing the game for runners around the world.
The lattice pattern harnesses the power of 4D. adidas has partnered with global innovation company, Carbon’s Digital Light Synthesis, to create a precisely fine-tuned midsole. This midsole offers scientifically-proven forward motion benefits to all runners.
New Shoe, New Features
The adidas 4DFWD 2 features an all-new Primeknit+ mesh upper. It has been engineered to give you that extra-supportive and snug fit. It’s complemented by an integrated heel counter to secure your foot while running. This technology pair offers a sock-like fit, with areas of the upper’s engineered mesh giving you that support exactly where it’s needed most.
The 4DFWD midsole delivers an additional 23% more cushioning for runners compared to previous 4D iterations. This means that runners can be assured of the comfort and energy return when hitting that next run.
Additionally, adidas continues its partnership with Continental™ for its outsole rubber. As a result, the technology provides extra grip for runners when you need confidence in all weather conditions.

Anette Hosoi, the Mechanical Engineering Professor at Massachusetts Institue of Technology, had this to say about the 4DFWD:
“When humans run, our forward motion is interrupted every time our foot hits the ground leading to a subtle stop-start motion between strides. This is true for all runners – no matter your ability. At the MIT Sports Lab, we are developing innovative technologies that offer a direct solution for overcoming that intrinsic challenge. And the new 4DFWD does just that.”
Step forward into the future of running with the adidas 4DFWD 2.
The new 4DFWD running shoes are available in both men’s and women’s variants online at adidas.co.za. It is also available in stores across the country, including adidas Concept stores.
