adidas Originals has been pushing the boundaries with many of their latest collaborations. The team turn up the heat with their latest partnership with fashion designer, Alexander Wang, as they continue to reinvent sports apparel and footwear, now in the 4th Season of the adidas Originals X Alexander Wang collaboration. What stands out about the collection is that it’s a subversive unisex collection, offering a link between past and present, recognizing the ephemeral nature of fashion today.
The collection features a mix of Wang’s previously released garments, graphics, and fabrics from past seasons, and redesigned with modern influences, fusing them with iconic fragments from the adidas archive. The designs created via a unique “photocopy” process to create a 2D collage of sorts. The aim of the technique was to create imperfect, off-kilter and slightly disjointed pieces, each of which bears Wang’s subversive signature style. Track tops, dresses, shorts, puffers, and crop tops feature naïve seaming, contrasting inserts, spliced logos, upside-down brand flags, and other “wrong” details. These flaws are designed by Wang to connect the disparate eras — the before and the after, the past and the present.
There are five new silhouettes included in the collection. The AW Skate Super revisits the tooling showcased in Season 1, which has been combined with an adidas Superstar upper, trimmed with thick, 80s-style laces while including a shell toe turned inside-out to show its barcode. The chunky, 70s-inspired AW Turnout Trainer features an updated colourway, while the AW Bball returns in a sleek, all-white style colourway. The new AW Puff Trainer pairs a multi-sport–inspired tooling with quilted uppers designed to mimic a puffer jacket. Lastly, the AW Futureshell — first glimpsed on the Alexander Wang Spring/Summer 2019 runway — merges ’00s-era basketball materials with a ’90s-style silhouette. The shoe is defined by its distinct shiny, one-piece moulded upper.
In addition to the styles released, the Season 4 campaign features a mock camping trip with model Anna Ewers in a stark white studio to emphasise the designs, which was photographed by Brianna Capozzi and styled by Haley Wollens. The adidas Originals X Alexander Wang collection will be available at adidas Originals stores, and various retailers across the country.
