When you think of cinematic masterpieces that have redefined a genre, The Matrix undoubtedly tops the list. This science fiction marvel of the ’90s didn’t just captivate with its pioneering visual effects and compelling narrative; it influenced popular culture in a remarkable way. Remember the frenzy around Neo’s signature black trench coat and sunglasses? Everywhere you looked, people were imitating this style, trying to emulate the cool and rebellious aesthetic of the film. Funnily enough, that unforgettable fashion trend is making its way back onto the scene. So naturally, we have conceptualised a pair of Matrix Air Jordan 1 sneakers to pay homage to the film’s enduring legacy.
Previously our talented creative at Sneaker Fortress, Brandon Krige, created a Matrix sneaker concept using the beloved Air Jordan 6 model as his canvas. However, this time our brilliant designer, Jarrod Saunders – a die-hard Matrix Trilogy enthusiast himself (yes, I said Trilogy for a reason)- has helped translate the unique world of The Matrix into these outstanding Air Jordan 1 “Martix” sneakers.
In creating this concept design, we couldn’t possibly overlook the impact of the film’s distinct colour palette. For this design, we have utilised “Black” and “Code Green” to craft a sleek and futuristic aesthetic. But these colours aren’t random; they carry deep-rooted symbolism from the movie. Let’s explore the design elements of the sneaker and unveil their hidden meanings.
Starting with the shoe’s upper, we have utilised sleek black leather. A rich charcoal black dominates the toe box, eye-stays and ankle flap, leading into an almost obsidian shade covering the toe and quarter panels.
Of course, the film’s primary use of black remains a point of conjecture. Some interpret it as representing the characters’ inconspicuous nature within the code, while others perceive it as a symbol of rebellion. Regardless of the exact interpretation, there’s no doubt that this colour choice gives our sneakers a sleek and stylish look.
Moving on, the shoe’s tongue, mudguard, heel and collar also sport shades of black, though this is where we introduce the “Code Green” colour. Applied in an almost spray-painted style, this green colour peeks through the black with varying levels of opacity.
Moreover, the iconic green shade is also prominent in the Nike Swooshes on the side of the shoe, the intricate stitching details and the outline of the wings logo.
This green hue is strongly associated with the virtual reality in the film. Scenes set within the Matrix are tinted green to evoke a digital feel reminiscent of the phosphorous green glow of old computers. We’ve incorporated this legendary colour into our design to pay tribute to the film’s unique visual aesthetic and encapsulate its futuristic look.
The most striking use of this green is in the sneaker’s upper coding details. Given that The Matrix made falling lines of code an emblem of futuristic imagery, our Matrix-inspired design wouldn’t be complete without this characteristic visual element.
Lastly, you can’t overlook that the midsole mirrors the designs dual-toned upper, although black reigns supreme. This design decision ensures a seamless and harmonious look, tying all design elements together. Contrary to this, the rubber outsole adopts a standout beige hue, contrasting against the sneaker’s prevailing colours.
And as always, we have conceptualised special packaging for our design as well. The box continues the narrative of the upper with its green coding and a sleek black finish. The Jumpman then takes centre stage with a bold and eye-catching placement on the top of the box, perhaps breaking free from the Matrix himself.
The combination of these colours creates a visually striking contrast that complements the overall aesthetic of the sneakers. Now, if only we could find our own Neo to bring these Matrix Air Jordan 1 sneakers from the virtual world into reality.
