Air Jordan 1 Low “International Women’s Day”
The Air Jordan 1 Low “International Women’s Day” was created in a retro style to draw attention to the past and the battles that women have fought to get the rights we have today. The sneakers make use of a couple of off-white accents while mostly maintaining a colour scheme dominated by “Amethyst Wave” and “Canyon Purple. The darker purple can be seen on the suede of the swoosh icon, while the lighter purple is on the sole and the majority of the upper where white isn’t present.

The shoe is made up of a variety of textiles like suede for the swoosh logo and the majority of the upper, corduroy for the tongue label and wrapping around the ankle and leather material for the rest of the upper, giving a refreshing build that also calls back to the textile industry. The shoes have an elegant flower graphic embroidered onto the lateral heel, bringing forth the femininity of the design and tying in the other yellow notes of the graphics and writing on the shoe. Of course, we can’t forget about the dark purple Air Jordan logo with wings that marks the pair as part of their collection.

There are “hand-drawn” graphics all over the toe box of the shoe, which reference the global holiday, with some messages that strongly invoke the message behind the day. The words “Equality” and “Unity” are printed on the leather of each side of the toe box, while the middle is dominated by the message “Because One Day This Day Will Be Our Everyday.”

The sock lining, laces and majority of the outsole are a unified off-white. The iconic Air Jordan 1 Low sole unit underfoot is a simple light purple and off-white colour scheme, letting the rest of the design speak for itself.

International Women’s Day
These sneakers were designed as a commemorative moment for the women’s rights movement. The textures and colours are a callback to the organized strikes that women would orchestrate in textile factories in 1857, and women today wouldn’t have the rights that we do without their efforts. Thanks to those brave women, the world celebrates International Women’s Day each year on the 8th of March.
This year, to celebrate together, Nike released their Air Jordan 1 Low “International Women’s Day” on the 6th of March across Europe, retailing for €129 (or R2,540.75 depending on the exchange rate at the time). Although this launch was exclusively for women, it wasn’t kept exclusive to Europe, and it is available to order online here in South Africa for R2,399.95 (a price tag like this also gets you free shipping, hint hint, nudge nudge).
