Custom sneaker artists are responsible for some of the most beautiful sneakers on the market today, including these beautiful “Griffey” Nike Dunk sneakers by Ant Kai, which are in honour of the legendary Seattle Mariners player Ken Griffey Jr.
These stunning sneakers were created for the Gallery 24 event hosted by Nike and Likelihood in honour of the legend of Seattle himself, Ken Griffey Jr, last year. The event featured art from amazing Seattle artists and Griffey’s own photography. While these sneakers might not be a retail option, fans could enjoy them in person, a rare occurrence for a prestigious custom artist like Ant Kai.
A canvas print of the photo of these sneakers was on display at the Gallery 24 event, along with the actual sneakers, which Griffey Jr signed! Now, these custom sneakers are practically priceless.
As mentioned, the sneakers took on a beautiful Mariner-inspired colourway, including shades of darker blue, lighter blue, white, grey, gold, silver, and red. Starting from the bottom, the Nike Dunk Low’s outsoles have been outfitted with a deep navy blue rubber that is then complemented by the light grey midsole.
The upper of the sneakers is entirely made of leather, including white perforated leather on the toe box and white leather on the quarter and wrapping around the collar. The overlays throughout the sneaker are all leather. Still, they take on either a lighter aqua shade of blue or the same deep navy colour that appears on the outsole. The best part about it is that from the left to the right sneaker, the colour of the overlays swaps for each element of the sneakers, like the heel counter and the mudguard, respectively, with the laces getting the same interchanging treatment.
According to Ant Kai, the profile Nike Swooshes also changed from left to right sneakers, with the left having gold Swooshes “for Griffey’s 10 Golden Gloves” and the right wearing silver Swooshes “for his 7 Silver Sluggers. “
The detailing below the Nike Swoosh on each sneaker is also different from left to right, with the right shoe representing Griffey’s number 24 and the right wearing his nickname and the name of the sneakers, “The Kid.”
The last two impeccable details of the sneakers include red hand-stitching on the outer side panels, perfectly reminiscent of a baseball, and, finally, a little backward swooshing on the toe panels. The backwards swooshes aren’t a reference to Travis Scott’s signature reverse swoosh but rather a nod to how Griffey popularised wearing his hat backwards in the MLB.
Unlike many custom sneakers we see, you can actually own a limited edition pair of these sneakers thanks to the limited restocking currently running on Ant Kai’s website. The sneakers come with a hefty price tag of $1800, but if you really want these sneakers to be yours, the option is there.
