Di’orr Greenwood x Nike SB Blazer Mid Celebrates The Navajo People

Di’orr Greenwood’s colourful Nike SB Dunk Low is just the beginning of her collaboration narrative. The story continues with an underrated gem from the ’70s – the Nike SB Blazer Mid. The Di’orr Greenwood x Nike SB Blazer Mid introduces a fresh lens to this classic model, emphasising the resilience and aspirations of the Navajo people.

Inspiration Behind The Sneaker’s Design

Much like her signature Dunks, Greenwood’s Blazer Mids pay homage to her Indigenous roots, right down to the “Diné”replacing the traditional Nike branding on the heel. For those unfamiliar, Diné is what the Navajo people call themselves. It’s a term that means The People. 

But where her Nike SB Dunk Low colourways flaunt the vibrant hues and patterns of her Navajo heritage, the Blazer Mid adopts a more subdued palette to symbolise the struggles Indigenous communities have faced in the past. 

A Closer Look at the Di’orr Greenwood x Nike SB Blazer Mid 

The sneaker features an all-grey suede upper blending Anthracite and Dark Smoke Grey hues to effectively tell its story. However, while the palette is subtle and understated, the detailing is anything but. 

For starters, the shoe includes a unique leather lace shroud adorned with intricate stitching that adds a touch of traditional Navajo craftsmanship to this contemporary sneaker. The design draws inspiration from the traditional Moccasin footwear worn by Greenwood’s ancestors, and which Di’Orr herself often skates in. 

Next, there’s the flower patch sewn onto the vamp, featuring a subtle turquoise bead at the centre. This detail symbolises light in the darkness, further reinforcing the shoe’s overarching theme. 

To finish, the sole unit features a mountain peak design, signifying battles faced and overcome. Together, these elements create a sneaker that not only pays tribute to tradition but also tells a powerful story of resilience and strength.

From thoughtful construction to artistic vision, the shoe is unlike anything else out there right now. And that is certainly something to celebrate- especially when it comes to collaborations.
