Nike has a chokehold on street culture and has for decades. The brand’s sneakers have been featured in every aspect of culture, from movies to series, and in many extraordinary ways. Still, sometimes the sneakers fly under the radar because of how different they look on screen compared to what they usually would look like. Did you know the Green Goblin wore a modified pair of Nike Foamposite sneakers in the 2002 Spider-Man movie?

We know that Batman wore a pair of iconic Air Jordan 6 sneakers that had been modified to match his suit in Batman Returns (1992). Still, many people didn’t realise that Willem Dafoe donned an epic pair of Nike Foamposite sneakers with his high-tech suit in Spider-Man (2002).
The pair started out as a pretty standard one, with a black outsole that transitioned to a dark green upper, having the hard beetle-like shell that made the Foamposite sneakers famous, with a silver arch section and black material on the top that sported the zip. This tongue label covered the top of the zip and was, all in all, a pair of pretty standard Nike sneakers. The pair that was used, the Nike Foamposite Metallic Gold “Green Goblin,” was later released in 2008.

The absolute marvel is how they were altered to fit the look of the Green Goblin for the film, with many additions and modifications to make them look like a boot rather than a pair of sneakers. The base sneakers were primarily left the same. Still, the colour of the sneakers was altered to make them look more worn, adding elements of black to the otherwise primarily green sneakers, as well as mattifying the look of the shiny exterior to draw less attention to the sneakers.

To make the sneakers look fit with the look, the leg of the suit extends down over the top of the sneakers to make it look like a boot rather than a shoe, adding buckles and overlapping armour pieces that come down the ankle to enclose around the sneakers.
The Foamposite has a fabric section on the top of the foot that allows a zip to make it easy to get in and out of the shoe, which has been covered with the same shiny material as the leg, with armour pieces to make the look cohesive. Matching the shape of the fabric covering, buckles have been added at two points on the shoe to match the buckles on the ankle and keep the covering snug against the shoe.

The Nike Foamposite was a perfect choice for the shoes for the Green Goblin’s outfit. The hard shell outer of the Foamposite suitably matches the hard shell exterior of the Green Goblin’s suit and mask, with an equally beetle-like shine to it. They fit so perfectly with the moulded suit that one would think the shoes had been designed specifically for the occasion.
