From tip to toe, these sneakers are a beautiful homage to the many ways families partake in the festivities of Día De Muertos, from the colours to the patterns to the different textures used throughout the sneakers.
Starting from the bottom, we see a plain gum outsole, perfect for the warmer fall colours of the rest of the sneaker, complemented by the cream midsole, one of the only two brighter pops within the sneakers, the laces.

Looking at the front of the sneakers, you might think that the mudguard is made up of something like a scaled texture, but it is actually a stunning brassy brownish olive leather representing the feathered wings of a hummingbird. This is tied to the beautiful traditional belief that many Southern American cultures hold that the spirits of the dead would come back and visit their loved ones in the form of a hummingbird. The hummingbird motif is repeated near the heel with an orange and turquoise insignia.

The smooth perforated leather of the toe box matches the pattern of crushed petals that naturally represent the vibrant marigold flower sprinkled on the ground as a pathway to the ofrenda, where the family places their offerings in honour of their loved ones.
Any part of the sneaker that isn’t olive or that warm golden hue is dominated by jet black in many different forms and textures. The panel that wraps around the heel has a striped texture that matches the olive lace stay area, while the heel tab and the Nike Swoosh have been added in a luxurious fuzzy suede. The darker shade continues throughout the inner lining of the shoe. It also appears on the tongue, completely consuming the back half of the sneakers.

That isn’t to say that there aren’t specific pops of colour throughout the shoe, such as the vibrant pink on the Nike branding of the heel tab and the branding and Swoosh icon on the tongue label. Still, if you peek inside the sneakers, you will find a turquoise insole with pink detailing, such as a matching insignia on the right shoe’s insole and the Nike Swoosh and “Familia” wording on the left.

Altogether, the elements of and throughout the sneaker come together to create a beautiful homage to the day and a respectful celebration of the culture.
