Six months ago we posted news that Nike announced its self-lacing sneakers, the Nike HyperAdapt 1.0, based on the movie, Back to the Future, which predicted it’s availability in 2015. Although a year later than the prediction, we’re still very excited about the prospect, which was made concrete when Nike revealed that the sneakers will go on sale from 28th November 2016.

The announcement was made via a Tweet from Nike’s Heidi Burgett, who said the sneakers will be available “experience & purchase”, but only in a few Nike stores around the US. Pricing has yet to be determined, and global release remains pending for now.

Wired released a featurette for the HyperAdapt 1.0, which included the company’s Tinker Hadfield and Tiffany Beers to explain the technology that’s available within the sneaker, demonstrating the charging and its LED lights.

The first performance vehicle for adaptive lacing, the Nike HyperAdapt 1.0 is the payoff of significant research in digital, electrical and mechanical engineering. The shoe provides precise, consistent, personalized lockdown that can be manually adjusted on the go.

Welcome the Nike HyperAdapt 1.0, the first performance vehicle for Nike’s latest platform breakthrough, adaptive lacing. The shoe translates deep research in digital, electrical and mechanical engineering into a product designed for movement. It challenges traditional understanding of fit, proposing an ultimate solution to individual idiosyncrasies in lacing and tension preference.”
