PUMA has been pushing the boundaries of sneaker design recently. With the likes of the PUMA FUTROGRADE leading the way, the brand has also expanded this design philosophy to its other releases in 2023. The first of these is the newly created PUMA Plexus – a new interpretation of design, fusing sport and style.
The PUMA Plexus has embraced the concept of what it means to be a future classic. It establishes a new and progressive design language that has been inspired by a seminal model from the brand’s archives, known as the Mostro.

The Mostro has been redesigned with futuristic touches and an updated Eggnog and Elektro Green colourway. It was designed for the brave and confident. Its base Eggnog colour is featured across the suede upper. Additionally, it also spans the midsole and toe cap. The Elektro Green contrasts against the earthy tones with a lace finish.
Lead Designer Sportstyle Footwear at PUMA, Hyon Park, explained the concept behind the new design:
“Given the initial design direction of creating a ‘future classic,’ I tried to position our archival PUMA Mostro as a new classic for the future.”
As a result, the 2023 Plexus propels the design ethos for PUMA into the future with innovative and explorative features. Its mixed material textiles, contrasting colours, and uncovered construction give it that handcrafted aesthetic.
Furthermore, the iconic PUMA Formstrip is by its roped laces, woven through the upper. Additionally, the aggressive lines across the tooling give it an unmistakable outdoor-ready approach.

In celebration of the PUMA Plexus, the brand has also launched its Plexus Playground initiative. It has partnered with digital creatives, Forty-Two-And-A-Half, to feature some fashion-forward artists to rework the Plexus into an even more futuristic design. As a result, 18 artists were selected from their network to transform the Plexus. This was achieved through various means, including physical creatives and even 3D model rendering.
The original version of the PUMA Plexus is exclusively available at Shelflife.
It retails at a price of R2,899 and is available both in-store and online. Lastly, additional colourways are slated to drop throughout 2023 for the PUMA Plexus, so stay tuned.
