With more than 100 years of sneaker history, we’ve seen many designs over this time. As of late, many brands have followed a strategy that has seen many of their classic designs in their history revamped, rebooted, or just remade as is. Taking cues from their archive, PUMA has rebooted their RS-O sneaker. Based on the original RS, which is short for Running System, the sneaker uses innovative, high quality cushioning technology, which was released in the ’80s as an answer to the demand for high-tech stability runners at the time.

The RS History

The PUMA RS-100 was originally released in 1986 and was considered extremely advanced for its time. This was followed soon after by the release of the RS Computer Shoe, the first-ever analytical shoe giving runners the power of computing to assist in their performance. The technology included a custom-designed computer chip built into the right heel, which allowed the sneaker to record the time, distance and calories expended. The results were then uploaded once plugged into a computer. The RS-350 was released in 1987 as a more streamlined ’80s running silhouette.

The RS Collabs

For the campaign, PUMA has partnered with a number of different influential and creative brands, individuals, and institutions to create drops and exploring themes such as gaming, music and photography. The first of collaborations has already been teased, which is the RS-0 silhouette featuring everyone’s favourite blue hedgehog, Sonic.

The rebooted RS sees its first drop on 19 April 2018, which features the RS-0 being stripped down to the basics and building it up again with a modern aesthetic and technical materials. The sneaker will be available in a green colourway and will retail for R2,199. The drop will be followed by the reboot of the RS-100 and the RS-350.
