Who doesn’t love The Simpsons? The animated sitcom has been around since the late 1980s and has been going strong. The series was renewed at the beginning of this year, helping it survive well into 2025, with no signs of ending any time soon. While there is much to unpack in the series and many artists find it inspirational, @dope_don_designs decided to focus on Bart’s alter-ego, Bartman, for a custom pair of Nike Dunk sneakers, so let’s take a look at the Bartman x Nike Dunk custom sneakers!
Bartman first appears in the episode where Bart and Lisa go to a comic book convention. Once they are already there, the siblings find out that they could have gotten a discount if they had attended dressed as a superhero. Even though they still had to pay the total price, Bart ran into a phone booth (authentic Superman style). He quickly donned a mask and a cape, calling himself Bartman when immersed.
The episode’s hilarity continued as Bart tried to tell people that Bartman was using a story about revenge, which was basically just a rip-off of Batman. In the story, Barman has a proper suit, grappling hooks, can climb walls, and can glide, all of which Bart can’t do in the suit he has made on the spot.
Despite being hastily made, Barman still became iconic, so it’s no wonder that @dope_don_designs created a pair inspired by the comical character. The sneakers have a colour palette that matches Bart’s outfit at the time, including the purple cape and mask.
Starting from the bottom, the outsole is an electric blue that can be seen repeated on other elements of the sneakers. The colour perfectly matches the uppers of Bart’s shoes, although the white of the midsole seems to suggest that the colours have been switched a little.
The electric blue is repeated on the laces of the sneakers and the panelling that wraps around the ankle. At the same time, the white can be seen once again on the Nike Swoosh logo, brought to life in this part with smooth leather.
The upper base is a light baby blue that perfectly matches Bart’s shirt, and the colour is repeated on the trim for the tongue and the inner lining of the sneakers.
Speaking of the tongue, the toe box and the tongue share the same bright yellow, seen again on the heel tab, and perfectly represents the colour of Bart’s skin and most people’s skin in the world of The Simpsons.
The panelling surrounding the sneakers is a deep purple, representing the mask and the cape that made Bart Bartman. The purple of the mudguard is extended over the toe box slightly, subtly matching the mysterious triangle shape of Bart’s hair. The purple has darkened sections with comic-book-style shadows, making it look like the pair has stepped straight out of the cartoon.
It might be a subtle reference to the show, and if you have not seen the episode, you might not recognise it, but @dope_don_designs has done a fantastic job of bringing his nostalgic concept to life.
