The Vans X Opening Ceremony collaboration has been going strong since 2014, as it’s built a powerful alliance based on mutual creative expression. Now, they’ve reunited to debut this eye-catching collection of footwear in South Africa.
Opening Ceremony was established in 2002, developing a reputation as a creative, multi-brand retailer that’s all about exploration and friendship. Its founders, Humberto Leon and Carol Lim, are recognised designers, who’ve pushed the boundaries and elevated voices beyond the fashion world. Now, they’re ready to celebrate their partnership with Vans on a global platform.
Vans has been a long-time creative partner of ours, and we’re so excited to collaborate on their iconic print this season,” Leon says. “For this new capsule collection, Carol and I are inspired to reinvent the checkerboard, taking a new graphic approach to Vans’ classic pattern.
Taking lead from Vans’ unforgettable checkerboard print, Opening Ceremony reinvented a classic with abstract snake and leopard patterns. Then, using Vans’ original deck shoe, the Authentic, as the canvas, they have created a repeat pattern that plays in both the positive and negative space – finding harmony between the motifs of the snake and leopard across the uppers and sole of each shoe.
The second delivery of footwear makes use of monochromatic uppers in orchid and baja blue. The Authentic QLT brings two of-the-moment colorways to Vans’ maiden silhouette, with all-over colour, quilted vamp and lateral stitching. To top it off, each shoe is kissed with an Opening Ceremony woven patch on the heel.
