Widely recognized for his contributions to the Air Jordan line of sneakers, sneaker legend Tinker Hatfield is celebrated for his innovative designs, pushing the boundaries of basketball shoes. But like all great creators, he has both highs and lows too. The esteemed Vice President of Innovation at Nike was recently engaged in a revealing conversation with TMZ, where he candidly divulged his least favourite Air Jordan design. For avid sneakerheads, Hatfield’s response comes as no surprise, as he unhesitatingly points to the Air Jordan 15 as his chosen contender for this title. But what is his favourite?

Hatfield continued to elaborate on the development of the Air Jordan 15, which marked a turning point in his creative journey. Aiming to take a temporary respite from the relentless task of crafting groundbreaking Jordans, he acknowledges that this particular design fell short of his own exacting standards. “I just didn’t quite nail that one, you know?” he admits. It becomes evident that Hatfield’s exhaustive efforts had taken their toll, leaving him with a sense of weariness and fatigue at that juncture.
For those familiar with Hatfield’s illustrious career, it comes as no surprise that the Air Jordan 15 emerged during a period fraught with personal challenges. Following its launch, Hatfield made the conscious decision to step away from the helm of Air Jordan design, seeking solace and rejuvenation. However, like a phoenix rising from the ashes (and much like the basketball star on which the shoes are based), he eventually returned in 2005 to spearhead the creation of the iconic Air Jordan 20, displaying his unwavering dedication and determination.
In a captivating episode of Netflix’s Abstract series, a compelling exploration of computer design and modern contemporary design, Hatfield unveils the intricate process behind conceiving the Air Jordan 15, delving into the myriad obstacles he encountered along the way. This glimpse into his creative journey further solidifies his reputation as a visionary designer, unafraid to confront and conquer the challenges inherent in his craft.

The Air Jordan 11

When the conversation shifts to Hatfield’s personal favourite, his affectionate gaze settles upon the Air Jordan 11. With deep sentiment and conviction, he reveals that this particular design will forever hold a special place in his heart. The reasons lie not only in its aesthetic appeal but also in the countless hurdles he valiantly overcame during its inception—a testament to his unwavering commitment to bringing his artistic vision to fruition.
The Jordan 11 will always be the number one for me because they told me to stop,” Tinker Hatfield explained about the legendary Air Jordan sneakers. Nike said no more Jordans. Michael is not playing. And I begged to differ and kept it going even under threat of some kind of punishment. I said no, I’m going to keep doing it. And even though I had to track him down while he was playing minor league baseball, I thought it was worth it and he really appreciated that I sort of stuck it out and did some… what I thought was my very best work.”
