Vans is no stranger to collaborative releases for collection throughout their archives. Having recently released the Vans X Led Zeppelin collaboration as a tie-in to their 50th anniversary, the brand has also featured prominently in music circles, especially in the rock scene. As one of the most influential artists of his generation and beyond, in terms of music, fashion and pop culture, Vans pays tribute to the legend David Bowie with the Vans X David Bowie collaboration.
The latest Vans capsule features four designs and prints through four of Bowie’s most influential albums, including Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, and Aladdin Sane. These four designs are featured on four iconic silhouettes – the Slip-On 47 V DX, Era, Old Skool and Sk8-Hi. The albums, as well as his artistry, has been immortalised, if not so already, with the collaboration.
The first silhouette in the capsule is the Slip-On 47 V DX, which pays tribute to the Hunky Dory album, Bowie’s fourth studio album. The shoe has a bright yellow suede finish, which has been mixed with a checkerboard faux fur. The look is finished off by means of the album’s title emblazoned on the sole.
The Era silhouette was inspired by Space Oddity, one of Bowie’s most successful albums. The shoe features an all-over print, which is reminiscent of the album cover, with the design completed with “Space” printed on the lateral side of the sole.
The Old Skool and Sk8-Hi silhouettes are based on Bowie’s alter-ego, Ziggy Stardust. The sneakers feature the trademark lightning bolts and rounded off with embroidery.
There is no official release date for the Vans X David Bowie capsule as yet. However, the capsule is rumoured to drop on 5 April 2019, with the range priced between USD $65 and $80. There’s also no official word whether the sneakers will drop in South Africa. Stay tuned for official confirmation.
