While we all know what happened with the outcome of the fight between WBC Super Lightweight Champion Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia, you can hardly blame the result on Haney’s superior fashion choices. Decked out in complete Fear of God attire, let’s take a look at the custom Fear of God “Moc Knit High” sneakers that Haney wore in the fight.
Devin Haney Wore Full Fear of God Gear
I know we are all here for the sneakers, but a little backstory is necessary. Since Devin Haney became one of Fear of God’s sponsored athletes, he has been making waves in the ring and in the fashion world. During one of his most recent fights, the star made his entrance in an all-ESSENTIALS by Fear of God outfit, but the gear didn’t stop there.
He also wore his FOG ESSENTIALS in the ring, as his boxing shorts were modified to match the iconic knitted shorts. Complete with FOG ESSENTIALS logos, sponsorships, and HANEY emblazoned across the back, he was fully decked out.
His shoes matched the shorts and appeared to be handmade, modified Fear of God “Moc Knit High” sneakers. Of course, their originals weren’t made for a tussle in the ring, so they had The Surgeon, the one and only, modify the kicks to be fit for the Super Lightweight Champion.
The Surgeon’s Fear of God “Moc Knit High”
The modified sneakers, created by the Surgeon, appeared to stay pretty accurate to the original Fear of God “Moc Knit High” sneakers but had a few essential adjustments.
What They Kept
The “Moc Knit High” sneakers kept the 100% wool ribbed texture knit upper in the classic Taupe colour and presumably the inner lining that was always built for ultimate comfort. However, the lining might have been slightly altered for a more secure fit in the ring.
The sneakers remained in their classic slip-on style, which was originally inspired by the traditional footwear of the Native Americans. The laces were up by the shins for added security. As far as we can tell from the images, the upper was almost completely unchanged, while the sole unit underwent a huge alteration to make it a better option for the ring.
The altered sneakers also kept the signature Fear of God black bar label on the heel, fitting in perfectly with the rest of the sponsored outfit.
What They Changed
The Fear of God “Moc Knit High” sneakers usually have a straight-across rubber sole unit similar to many of their other minimalist sneakers, but I’m sure you can imagine that those sneakers were built for fashion and the streets, not in the ring. The originals also usually feature a suede heel tab to add to their aesthetic.
Once The Surgeon was done with them, the modified sneakers had a different sole unit. Unfortunately, the suede heel tab had been sacrificed for the modified heel, presumably in the name of better support in the ring.
The new outsole now had ridges and shape, giving it better traction and support for the event. In place of the suede heel tab, the outsole extends up on the heel, providing better support and security than the originals would have.
Whether the modifications helped Haney’s fight is a strong point of debate on The Surgeon’s Instagram, but they were definitely much more effective than the traditional lifestyle-orientated “Moc Knit High” would have been.
Where To Buy The Fear of God “Moc Knit High”
As the modified pair was one-of-a-kind and made especially for Devin Haney to wear in the ring, the likelihood of getting your hands on a pair of those is, unfortunately, pretty low.
That said, if you are still looking for the look, you can get the original Fear of God “Moc Knit High” sneakers in Taupe from their website for $4,121.
What We Like About Them
Fear of God’s distinctive and minimalist style hits all the right boxes for the fashion world right now. The sock/boot-like aesthetic is also a big winner, as it provides comfort for sneakerheads who want to look great while enjoying sneakers with more of a lifestyle application.
As for The Surgeon’s Fear of God “Moc Knit High”, it’s impressive how he managed to stay true to the original design while creating enough modification on an incredibly minimalist silhouette that you can instantly see it has been altered.
With both comfort and style in mind, these sneakers would be a great addition to any sneakerheads looking to supplement their cosy lifestyle collection, especially if they can front the cost.
