Let’s face it: the Samba stood out as one of the most coveted shoe models of 2023, becoming a go-to for the fashion-conscious. Nonetheless, as trends naturally ebb and flow, the hype around the Samba had begun to cool off recently. Yet, thanks to heavyweight collaborations such as the upcoming Dingyun Zhang x adidas liaison, our attention is once more firmly drawn back to the stand-out Samba silhouette.

Zooming in on the Sneaker Design

Most people may associate Dingyun Zhang with his stint at Yeezy. However, the talented Chinese-Mongolian designer, noted for his bold, oversized aesthetic, brings more than just his experience at Yeezy to the table when it comes to creating unique and eye-catching designs. In fact, he has collaborated with top brands like Marni and Moncler over the past four years. Now, he lends his distinct touch to the new Adidas design.

Outfitted in shiny ‘Core Black’ patent leather, this version of the sneaker has a slick, oil-like appearance. It also features black suede on the toe box and tonal mesh on the heel for a contrasting finish.

However, the attribute that sets this Samba apart is the added cushioning on the lateral and medial sidewalls, which creates the designer’s signature oversized look. This is a clear nod to Zhang’s iconic puffer jacket range, which has caused quite a stir in the fashion industry. The collar and toe box are also enhanced with a padded design, making the overall silhouette even more pronounced.

You’ll also notice the co-branding in the middle of the leather tongue, which lets everyone know this isn’t your everyday Samba (because it definitely is not). The perforated Three Stripes on the sides are another impressive little detail that shouldn’t go unnoticed.

Rounding off the design is a black rubber midsole and black cotton laces, echoing the overall tonal look. It’s safe to say that while the Samba has stayed remarkably true to its original design over its 75-year journey, the upcoming Dingyun Zhang x Adidas Samba’ Core Black’ takes a bold leap from the familiar look we’ve associated with the model.

The monochromatic theme may seem lowkey, but the detailing on Zhang’s adidas Sambas screams innovation. This may be the first of Zhang and adidas collaborations, but we can only hope it’s the start of many more beautiful shoes to come. After all, who wouldn’t want more puffer jacket-style kicks for their feet?

The Release Details

Dingyun Zhang x Adidas Samba

The highly anticipated Dingyun Zhang x Adidas Samba “Core Black” release is just around the corner, with the date set for May 10th. You’ll be able to find it at Adidas via the Confirmed app and at select retailers internationally. This sneaker may command a slightly higher price tag (coming in at $250 USD) than other adidas Samba editions. However, fans of Zhang’s distinctive design touches will recognise it as a worthy investment.

If you’re keen on securing your own pair, remember to participate in the CONFIRMED draw, open from May 4th (4:00 AM EST) up to May 10th (9:30 AM EST).
