So, what do you do when you’re a legendary filmmaker and one of your most influential movies reaches its 35th anniversary? Well, if you’re Spike Lee, you celebrate with an iconic block party and design a limited-edition sneaker to mark the momentous occasion. This latest Jordan Spizike Low colourway stands as a fitting homage to Lee’s groundbreaking film from the ’80s, “Do the Right Thing.”
A Quick Dive Into The Film
In 1989, Spike Lee wrote, directed, and starred in Do The Right Thing, a film that astutely examined racial tensions in a Brooklyn neighbourhood on an unbearably hot summer day.
The film was a resounding success, earning Lee an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay and cementing his place as a visionary filmmaker. However, this film is even more impressive because of its persistent relevance and impact on race and social justice discussions in America.
As it marks its 35th anniversary, the film continues to captivate with its powerful storytelling, memorable characters, and themes that resonate deeply with audiences even today. And so, to honour this milestone, Lee’s signature Jordan model receives a special Do The Right Thing makeover.
A Closer Look At The Sneaker
This particular Jordan Spizike Low colourway features a striking white leather upper accentuated by vibrant red and green details. These colours reference the “Sal’s Famous Pizzeria” t-shirt worn by Lee’s character, Mookie, in the iconic film. The elephant print is also rendered in a cohesive grey and black palette, seamlessly integrating into the shoe’s overall theme.
But what truly elevates these sneakers above your average pair is the abbreviated “DTRT35” label above the side netting, along with the 40 Acres and a Mule production company logo on the tongue (as well as on the heel where it usually resides). The black lace dubraes are stamped with “1989”, adding yet another special touch.
Finally, the embroidery inside the collar makes the pair even more exclusive, signifying a limited release of just 100 pairs. Plus, the packaging is equally unique, arriving in a charred pizza box-inspired design, a nod to the film’s dramatic climax.
Is The “Do the Right Thing” Spizike Low Up For Grabs?
Unfortunately, this particular version of Spike Lee’s iconic hybrid sneaker is strictly a friends and family release, so it won’t soon hit the shelves for the general public. Yet, never say never! Given the resurgence of Nike’s rarest collaborations, such as the Wu-Tang Clan’s Nike Dunk Highs and the Nike Air Max 1 “Grand Piano”, made exclusively for Taiwan’s elite retailer, PHANTACi, there’s always hope.
However, there’s a silver lining for fans of “Do the Right Thing.” You can still snag a white, red, and blue “Do the Right Thing” Spizike from 2007 on platforms like StockX and GOAT. It’s a classic!
In the meantime, there are plenty of other stunning colourways to keep an eye on, such as the Jordan Spizike Low “Lightning” and the “Black Cat”. And, of course, stay tuned to us here at Sneaker Fortress for the latest sneaker drops and reviews.
