If we talk about soccer legends, Lionel Messi undoubtedly tops the list. This extraordinary player holds the record for being an eight-time Ballon d’Or recipient and has rallied up every possible football achievement during his commendable career. Alongside his grand football journey, Messi has maintained a fruitful association with adidas for almost two decades, creating stunning collaborations, and the famed Samba is no exception. But does his recent Lionel Messi x adidas Samba reflect this player’s impressive legacy? Well, we’ll leave that judgment to you.

Inspiration from the Argentinian Kit Colours

First off, it’s important to mention that the Messi x adidas Samba collection presents two colour options, both paying homage to Messi’s Argentinian lineage and his tenure with his cherished national team. A fun fact for you: Messi is one of the rare six gentlemen who have participated in five World Cups for their respective team, which certainly testifies to his incredible longevity and dedication to the sport

The first design on the list proudly represents the official colours of Argentina’s kit, highlighting a clean white leather base with blue accents on the Three Stripes, tongue, laces, and inner lining as a tribute to his roots. You can also spot deliberate references to the maestro with Messi’s monogram on the tongue and “Messi” branded in gold on the side. For this pair, end touches include a golden heel tab that aligns with the branding and a soft grey suede toe box. Tying the design together is a semi-transparent rubber sole.

The second colourway, influenced by Argentina’s soccer colours, instead focuses on the team’s purple away kit for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. These sneakers showcase crisp white leather, purple Three Stripes, and corresponding heel tabs. Key details on this pair comprise Messi’s bright yellow logo on the tongue and gold embossed “Samba” on the side. A gum rubber outsole then rounds off the design.

That brings us back to our question. With such a sterling career behind him and probably more accolades to come, does this Samba do justice to Messi’s legacy both on the field and with Argentina?

Comparing to the Past Argentine-themed Colourway

Though we can certainly appreciate these colour schemes as a tribute to Messi’s Argentinian ancestry, the design might seem slightly underwhelming. In the past (2012 to be exact), Adidas has launched a “White/Blue” Samba acknowledging Messi’s Argentine roots. The pair had beautiful details like a custom Argentina patch on the insoles and a distinct texture on the tongue. Honestly, that design seemed more appealing to me.

Although this design might not resonate with everyone, including myself, remember that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. Some may fall in love with it, which is fine. After all, style is a subjective thing. So, if you’re among those who find it captivating and are curious about where to pick up a pair, let’s continue.

Where and When to Buy?

The Lionel Messi x adidas Samba in white and blue has been up for sale since February 20, 2024. You can purchase these from adidas.com or selected adidas outlets. Priced at $100 USD, the Samba is available in men’s sizes. As for the purple variant, there is still no release date available for this pair. However do check back for more details.
