Review: xVESSEL Nougat Classics Bring Back ’90s Skate Culture

The bulky skater shoe of the ’90s evokes memories of Lizzard and Island Style, as these heavy-duty sneakers were made to survive the harshest grinds and intense kickflips as the skater blasts Pennywise and Bad Religion in the background. The xVESSEL Nougat Classics aren’t necessarily designed to endure the same stress and conditions, but they bring the fashion back to 2024 – plus, it’s always a good time to revisit Pennywise and Bad Religion. There’s a jagged, grungy aesthetic to the footwear that combines the best of the past with the sensibility of the present.

A vintage attitude

The classic black and white look is not only easy on the eye but also ensures these become the go-to sneakers to pair with any look. The silhouettes feature a deconstructed, frayed design, adding a notable edge and character to the shoe that make it stand out. Undoubtedly, this imperfect, rugged look combined with the rubber toe evoke memories of the vintage Chuck Taylor All Star Classics, and it’s clear this is one of the biggest influences of the xVESSEL Nougat Classics. This is footwear designed for people who prefer creative expression rather than meticulous lawlessness.

Bulky but comfortable

Review: xVESSEL Nougat Classics Bring Back '90s Skate Culture

Instantly noticeable, the sneakers feature an elevated removable insole that appears to be even more heavy duty than traditional skate shoes. On a surface level, it comes across as stiff and uncomfortable, but it’s completely the opposite when someone slips them on. Similarly, the tongue is extra thick and wide, but the padding possesses a soft touch that isn’t hard on the front of the foot. There’s a comfort and cushioning that belies the hulking appearance.

Part of the reason for this is because the xVESSEL Nougat Classics feature a cork midsole that allows for greater comfort and for the shoe to breathe, which also means the sneaker becomes more adaptable after it’s worn in. Furthermore, each pair is 100% handmade and utilises the process of vulcanisation – like other brands such as Converse and Vans – so there’s still a modern standard applied to the design.

All heart, no sole

The sole is the only real concern about the xVESSEL Nougat Classics. The grip and design aren’t particularly strong or predominant, so if someone wears these sneakers in wet conditions, they run the risk of slipping or falling. They are designed for dry and stable surroundings, but if there’s a bit of water in the area, prepare to become the Lord of the Dance.

xVESSEL Nougat Classics

At $250 a pop, the xVESSEL Nougat Classics aren’t the cheapest sneakers around on the market, and it’s likely anyone can pick up a decent pair of Vans or Chuck Taylors for half the price. However, the xVESSELs offer an original experience and fresh aesthetic for those wanting something vintage but also a little more (as the writing on the toes read: Peace by piece). Not only do the sneakers possess their own distinctive attitude and design, but they are also extremely comfortable to wear and sure to turn heads.
