It can be difficult to pick a favourite model from the Air Jordan range because there are so many iconic styles, but for many sneakerheads, the Air Jordan 13 is that design. When they first debuted in 1997, the Jordan 13s stood out for several reasons, among which were their trademark panther details. This includes everything from the chunky paw-inspired outsole to the distinctive “cat eye” logos on the ankle and even quilted uppers inspired by the whiskers of the large cat. But if you’re wondering why the model features these distinct aspects, Tinker Hatfield is reported to have modelled this design after Michael Jordan’s predatory playing style, which involved reading his opponent and striking like a panther.
The sneaker first appeared in two low and five high-top colourways during the 1997–1998 season, including the timeless “Bred” and “Flint Grey” colourways that are still among the most sought-after options among sneakerheads. This stunning sneaker model has since been envisioned in a wide variety of colourways and collaborations, and we’ve compiled a list of fifteen of the most memorable Air Jordan 13 releases that have cemented its legacy in sneaker history.
Air Jordan 13 Retro “Midnight Navy”

Despite being a newbie to the Jordan 13 roster given its release in 2024, the “Midnight Navy” colourway stands out thanks to its gum rubber outsole—a feature not usually seen in the AJ13 lineup. However, the remainder of the design is equally stylish, with a dimpled white leather upper and navy details that give it a timeless and clean look. Air Jordan 13 Retro “Cap and Gown”

With its slick combination of all-black patent leather and suede, this variation of the AJ13 has a somewhat more upscale construction than your average colourway, making it more appropriate for dressier settings. Despite being a sequel to the popular “Cap and Gown” AJ11s from 2018, this colourway is perhaps not as coveted as its predecessors. However, they do offer a distinctive and refined choice for Jordanheads who want to up their sneaker ante.
Solefly x Air Jordan 13 Retro “I’d Rather Be Fishing”

In 2022, Jordan Brand and Miami-based sneaker retailer SoleFly collaborated to produce a White, University Blue, and Neutral Grey version of the iconic AJ 13 model. Given the light blue suede panels, the colour palette was first associated with Michael Jordan’s alma mater, the University of North Carolina. However, the GOAT’s custom-built, luxury sports fishing Catch23 yacht was the actual inspiration behind the design of the shoe. The sneaker has several details that connect it to the theme, including ripstop uppers, holographic logos at the outsole and heel said to mimic the reflection of water, and—most importantly—elephant print detailing on the insoles that references the wrap on MJ’s yacht.
Air Jordan 13 Retro “Olive”

In 2018, the Jumpman Label added the “Olive” colour scheme to its lineup of Jordan 13s, drawing inspiration from its famed Jordan 9 colourway. Suede covers the uppers, with the overlays done in dark black, while the base, heel, and medial collar are light olive. Red accents are used on the branding details to provide a splash of colour and add a touch of contrast to the overall design.
Air Jordan 13 “Bred”

Originally released in 1998, the “Bred” AJ 13 was one of Michael Jordan’s main aids on his way to winning his sixth and final NBA title. His Airness donned these striking red and black sneakers during his iconic ‘Last Dance’ season. However, the importance of the colourway within the model’s lineup was made clear in 2023 when a pair of these shoes (worn by MJ) sold for an incredible $2.2 million at Sotheby’s.
Air Jordan 13 “He Got Game”

Although a large chunk of Jordan Brand’s most popular colourways have sprung to prominence on the feet of the GOAT himself, the “He Got Game” colourway is special in that it received even more recognition (and its nickname) thanks to an appearance in the Spike Lee movie of the same name. The sneaker was memorably worn by Denzel Washington’s character, Jake Shuttlesworth, in the 1998 film, which extended its cultural relevance beyond the basketball court. They offer tumbled leather uppers in white and black, a green hologram on the side panel, and a red and white outsole below. More information about the Air Jordan 13 “He Got Game”.
Air Jordan 13 “Chicago”

This White, Black, and True Red version of the Jordan 13s is the perfect colourway to honour MJ’s time with the Chicago Bulls. The uppers are made of crisp white leather, with red suede accentuating the midfoot and heel. A black sole unit and matching black branding elements finish the overall look. Fans who have been waiting since their last retro drop in 2017 to grab a pair will be pleased to know that these beauties will make their much-welcomed return in 2026. Air Jordan 13 Retro “Black Cat”

Jordan Brand unveiled a “Black Cat” colourway for the Jordan 13 back in January 2017, which is fitting considering that the black panther inspired this popular model’s design. The sneaker’s uppers are made of black mesh and suede, with matching rope laces and, of course, the holographic ‘cat’s eye’ logo on the ankle. The midsole and panther paw outsole are also finished in black. A simple and sleek colourway to honour MJ’s “Black Cat” nickname.
Air Jordan 13 “Flint”

Even if Michael Jordan didn’t wear the “Flint” Jordan 13s on court when they were first introduced in 1998, they still went on to become one of the most popular colourways of the Tinker Hatfield-designed silhouette. The combination of the signature grey suede, navy blue mesh, and white leather on the upper creates a classic and versatile look that you can’t really go wrong with.
Air Jordan 13 “Playoffs”

Since Jordan wore this classic colourway during his 1998 NBA All-Star Game and championship run that same year, it has become one of the most iconic and sought-after Jordan 13s. The black leather upper, bright yellow circle logo on the tongue and white and red sole unit create a stylish and versatile design that will forever be associated with Michael Jordan’s legendary career.
Air Jordan 13 Retro “Oregon Ducks” (F&F)

The University of Oregon is well-known for its exceptional player-exclusive Nike sneakers, and the 2018 Air Jordan 13 Retro created for their men’s basketball team is among their finest. The upper is made of grey suede, with white leather on the toe and an Oregon Duck emblem on the hologram ankle tag. Given that these kicks were a friend and family-only release, they are pretty rare and as such command a high resale price.
Air Jordan 13 Retro “Oregon Track & Field” (F&F)

Another Oregon-exclusive Jordan 13 design for the books is the black and yellow design created for the track and field team in 2018. This colourway features black leather uppers and matching suede toes, with yellow details throughout. Given their scarcity and distinctive design, it’s another pair that commands a premium price on the resale market.
Air Jordan 13 “Christopher Wallace”

In 2023, Jordan Brand collaborated with the Christopher Wallace Memorial Foundation to produce limited-edition Jordan 13s, marking what would have been the 45th birthday of Christopher Wallace, better known to the community as the famous Biggie Smalls. In homage to the iconic rapper and his style, the sneakers have a red and black plaid flannel design on the inner lining, a few of his famous lyrics on the inner tongues and graphics of him embroidered on the front. Twenty-three pairs of these beautiful Jordan retro sneakers were auctioned on Sotheby’s online site, with the proceeds benefiting the foundation’s charitable efforts.
