With the first batch of Yeezy Pods already on the feet of eager buyers, some are raising their brows at the limited range of sizes and questioning whether the quality of the sock-like shoes justifies the cost. On the flip side, there are those who have lauded the “shoes” (a term used very loosely) merits, with comfort being hailed as a major advantage. So, it’s time to delve into what Kanye’s new footwear venture brings to the table in terms of comfort and quality or if it’s simply a hyped-up sock with a high price tag riding on Ye’s star power.
What Are Yeezy Pods?
Yeezy’s coveted Sock Shoes have been the centre of much attention since they were spotted on West’s feet throughout 2023. Understandably, we were all curious about the success the Yeezy Pods would muster. After all, the forthcoming success seemed rather uncertain with all the negative press around his past behaviour and a highly-publicised split from adidas. Not to forget, this shoe is also the first release under the leadership of the equally controversial Gosha Rubchinskiy, who has had his own fall from grace. Yet, despite all the odds, by February 12, the brand had sold a whopping 266,000 pairs, which translates to approximately $5,320,000 in sales.
Perhaps it was the hefty price slash from $200 USD in December down to $20 in February that led to these staggering numbers or even the brand’s unorthodox promotional campaign like the viral Super Bowl ad. However, it may be worth noting that these low costs were introduced post-criticism of the Yeezy Pods, with the critique focused on sizing, design and quality. Although in his defence, fans have noted that Ye has always intended to make footwear that is more accessible to the masses.
In addition, the @Yzy Instagram page shared that customers who initially shelled out $200 for the footwear could touch base with the company to bag a refund of $180. This decidedly generous act poses a big question. Was this part of a cleverly crafted marketing manoeuvre cooked up by Ye and his team to stir up excitement for a product that doesn’t quite justify even the lowered price tag? Well, let’s take a look at whether these Yeezy Pods really offer value for your money.
Are the Yeezy Pods Any Good?
Ye’s latest invention in footwear, referred to as the “foldable future,” boasts a sleek black sock-like design that stretches up to the mid-calf, two rubber pods beneath and a padded insole for increased comfort.
Despite their non-traditional aesthetic, the Yeezy Pods have generally garnered positive responses for their comfort level. A quick glance at reviews on YouTube or social media reveals a number of happy customers singing praises of how these shoe-like socks feel great on the feet. It is often likened to the comfort of wearing compression socks ( stretchy, snug-fitting socks that apply pressure to your limbs to stimulate blood flow effectively) equipped with a rubber sole and foam insole – some say it’s almost like walking barefoot.
The trouble seems to mostly revolve around the size offering of the shoes. Available in only three sizes: 1 (US 6-8.5), 2 (US 9-10.5), or 3 (US 11-13), users reported that the shoes tend to have a more oversized fit. Therefore, anyone between sizes should consider sizing down.
But that’s not the only issue. Although the shoes were initially manufactured in Italy, production later moved to China to achieve the $20 price range (although this wasn’t effectively communicated to the masses). Earlier versions were labelled with “MADE IN ITALY” on the outsole, while newer models seem to carry no inscription. So, if you’re anticipating a lavish Italian-made product for $20, you might want to adjust your expectations.
Another snag you might hit with the Sock Shoes is their lack of adaptability to different weather conditions. They really only put their best foot forward in warm climates. If you dare to wear them in the rain or snow, you may grapple with water creeping in through the sock or deal with a somewhat slippery ordeal. But other than these issues, they seem to wear pretty well.
Should You Spend $20 on the Yeezy Pods?
Naturally, all this begs the question: are these shoes worth parting with $20? Given that you’d be hard-pressed to find a cheaper alternative in today’s market, the Yeezy Pods might be a worthy investment if you’re looking for a unique footwear option to lounge around at home, travel in, or run errands on a warm day. They are also bound to be a conversation starter, so if you want to stand out or enjoy being the centre of attention (good or bad), these Yeezy Pods are right up your alley.
If, however, you prefer footwear that offers decent support or comes with a plush insole, these might not be your best bet. But considering they cost the same as a meal at a fast-food restaurant, they could still be worth a try.
That said, the Yeezy Pods are currently unavailable on the Yeezy site. But there are rumours that the brand is set to launch an improved version of the shoe, so you should keep an ear to the ground for the next wave of Yeezy Pods. Alternatively, StockX currently has all three sizes in stock, with prices ranging between $39 and $60 USD. Whether these shoes are worth the elevated price, though, is something we’ll leave you to decide.
