Two of the most colourful characters in design and sport have collaborated on a product that deserves all of our attention. Though it may not be for everybody, the KidSuper x LaMelo Ball sneaker will undoubtedly turn heads, and in this article, we’ll tell you more about the shoes.
All About Kid Super
If you’ve never heard of KidSuper, the name is the brainchild and nickname of Colm Dillane, a Brooklyn-based American artist, designer, and musician steadily making waves in the fashion world. Like many of us with big dreams, KidSuper started small, with Dillane screen-printing graphic t-shirts for friends in his parents’ basement while he was in high school. This DIY spirit and love for bold, playful designs became the foundation of his brand, KidSuper Studios.
The brand has become a significant player in streetwear, known for its unconventional and often whacky approach. If you can think of hand-painted graphics, unexpected materials, and a vibrant, almost childlike energy, then you’ve got an idea of what the label is about. It’s a refreshing take on fashion that’s caught the eye of some of the biggest names in the industry.
Dillane has collaborated with Louis Vuitton, bringing his signature style to their men’s collection. He’s also dipped his toes into the world of sports, designing uniforms for the NBA All-Star Weekend and even creating custom gameday looks for stars like LeBron James. And now, he’s joined hands with another NBA player—young star LaMelo Ball.
LaMelo Ball and PUMA
LaMelo Ball’s dazzling playmaking skills and sharp court vision have solidified him as one of the NBA’s most captivating young talents. He has a signature shoe with PUMA, the MB.03, the third edition of the eye-catching sneaker line. The MB.03 line is designed to turn heads with its bold design philosophy, perfectly capturing Ball’s flamboyant on-court personality.
The PUMA MB.03 opts for a wild, whacky kaleidoscope of colours and striking graphics. For example, there’s the “Toxic” edition, which features a bold green accent. Then there’s the “Dexter’s Laboratory” collection, which makes use of a vibrant palette inspired by the beloved cartoon.
As part of this tradition of colourful innovation embodied by the PUMA MB.03 line, the collaboration with KidSuper Studios will be released in early May 2024. This upcoming edition promises a unique aesthetic incorporating KidSuper’s signature playful graphics and somewhat zany aesthetic. So, let’s dive into talking more about this sneaker.
KidSuper x LaMelo Ball Sneaker Design
The KidSuper x LaMelo Ball sneaker (also known as the “MB.03 KidSuper Studio edition” or the KidSuper Studios x MB.03 “Pink Lilac” or the KidSuper x PUMA MB.03) features a predominantly bubblegum pink base on its upper, accented with pops of blue, but the true eye-catcher lies in the unique patterning.
You’ll find abstract shapes and even whimsical faces all around the upper, transforming it from a mere sneaker choice into a work of wearable art. The laces match the primary pink, as does the sole, peppered with blue accents for contrast. This special edition of the MB.03 has some notable extras that set it apart. Not only does it have fuzzy suede patches on the sides, but it also has the KidSuper logo in the heel area. Also, the sneakers come in a special box that matches the fabulous designs on the shoe itself.
The interior lining, in a complementary blue, reinforces the cohesive design. Moving to the medial side of the shoe, navy blue text reading “ND.1” is located on the tongue, with the word ‘Dare’ in the same shade of blue as the lining.
