Not many sneakerheads get the opportunity to own bespoke sneakers in their lifetime. Because of the amount of work that goes into making them, they usually come with an exorbitant but justified price tag. These customised Nike Air Max 1 “Skunk” sneakers not only give sneakerheads the opportunity to own bespoke sneakers but also to show off their love for The Skunk.
Nike Air Max 1 “Skunk” Sneakers
The Nike Air Max 1 “Skunk” sneakers were designed by Netherlands-based artist Sam van IJzendoorn (going by @vijzbespokes on Instagram). Specifically made with the unofficial holiday of imbibing cannabis in mind, these sneakers have a very distinct look that will be instantly recognizable to most recreational users.
That being said, if you don’t have that habit, these sneakers are still awesome, and we appreciate them for their artistic theme and interesting colour combination. The sneakers will be dropping in two distinct colourways, both of which use a purple and green colourway, but one mirrors the other. While we will have more on the colourway shortly, here are some finer details about the sneakers for you to enjoy.
Each sneaker adopts the traditional Nike Air Max 1 look but has a few added touches that massively separate it from the rest. For starters, because the sneakers are bespoke, you can decide whether you want the iconic Travis Scott reverse Swoosh or the classic Nike Swoosh on your sneakers for no extra cost.
While choices beyond that and sizing are limited, these sneakers have a gorgeous turquoise skunk embroidered on the heel and a custom tongue label featuring a laser-engraved weed leaf integrated with the Viyz brand logo.
Both sneakers feature an upper of hair on leather, suede and traditional leather, standard rubber heels, insoles, and laces.
The “Skunk” variation features light green hair on a leather base, darker green suede, and orange accents throughout the sneakers, including the lace stays and decorative stitching. The Nike swoosh, label, and laces all take on the complementary purple shade, with the former being a more traditional leather.
The “Reverse Skunk” F&F variation does exactly what it says. It reverses the colourway, using a lighter purple for the leather hair, a darker purple for the suede, and green on the leather swoosh, tongue label, and laces. The only element that isn’t reversed is the decorative stitching throughout the pair, which is a lighter purple.
What we like about them
While we neither condone nor condemn the theme behind the sneakers, we do love the variations of texture used throughout them and the epic combination of colours. You can see that thought has gone into every aspect of the sneakers, from the embroidery to the laser-engraved elements.
While bespoke sneakers are usually only an option for the elite and uber-wealthy of the sneaker world, and these still fetch a pretty penny, it’s amazing that Vijz is giving sneakerheads the opportunity to own them.
Where to buy them
Both variations of the sneakers were released on April 20th, 2024 (4/20/2024). They are available on the vijzbespokes.com website, each retailing for €1,500.00 (roughly $1,604.82).
Due to their nature being bespoke sneakers, pairs will be handmade for sneakerheads who order them to their size, and each variation will only be made a certain number of times before IJzendoorn removes the listing from his website.
The Nike Air Max 1 “Skunk” will be made only ten times, while the Nike Air Max 1 “Reverse Skunk” F&F colourway will have an even more limited release, with only four pairs to be made. So, if you want a pair of these bespoke sneakers, run, don’t walk.
Which Nike Air Max 1 sneaker would you choose, the “Skunk” or the “Reverse Skunk” F&F sneakers?
