Angus “Mac” MacGyver was far more than just a master of improvisation with everyday objects; he was, without a doubt, a figurehead for style, especially when it comes to his iconic Nike sneakers.

Remembering MacGyver

There are specific television programmes that you never quite forget. For many, MacGyver is a perfect example. This series centres around a scientifically brilliant special forces soldier who becomes an operative for the Phoenix Foundation, known for his unmatched problem-solving skills and knack for leveraging mundane objects in extraordinary ways.

Where I’m from, being called a “MacGyver” is still very much the highest compliment anyone can pay you. It’s an adjective we use to describe someone resourceful and quick-thinking who can solve complex predicaments with less than-ordinary tools at their disposal. But MacGyver was far more than just a master of impromptu problem-solving. He also had a serious knack for fashion.

Mac’s wardrobe was a hit, right from his iconic Ralph Lauren bomber jackets, to an impressive array of Nike sneakers, every bit as memorable as the nifty gadgets Mac built out of next to nothing (like the ultra lite airplane he made out of unusual items like bamboo poles, a wheelbarrow tyre, tent, lawnmower engine and duct tape)! He wore classic 80s hoop shoes, alongside timeless masterpieces like the Air Jordan 5’s. The man knew that being a hero was not just about saving the day, but looking sharp while doing it! So, let’s look over some of the most unforgettable Nike sneakers that Angus MacGyver wore during the show’s lifetime.

1. Nike Court Force High

Nike Court Force High

In the exciting third season of MacGyver, the titular hero famously wore a pair of white and grey Nike Court Force High sneakers. This specific sneaker model remains an enduring favourite within the MacGyver fanbase, as they featured prominently in 1987, the same year the show was arguably at its peak in popularity. The blend of style and practicality that these sneakers offer ensures they don’t lose their charm, even by today’s standards.

The design: The colourway worn by Mac has a chic white leather body accented with grey highlights along the collar, tongue, and iconic Nike Swoosh. A distinct perforation pattern sweeps across the toe box and quarter panels of this model, elevating the overall visual appeal of the sneakers.

What we like about it: The lasting appeal of these sneakers rests on their timeless design. While they embody the stylistic essence of the ’80s, you could just as easily see someone wearing them today and not think twice about it.

Model release date: 1987

Where to buy it: Finding a pair of Nike Court Force High kicks in this specific colour palette might be a tall task owing to their vintage status. However, GOAT has a 1987 model in a striking white and green combination, and eBay offers a long lineup of alternative colour variants.

2. Nike Air Force 2 High

MacGyver Nike Sneakers

In the fourth season of the popular action-adventure series, Mac swapped his regular Nike Court Force High from season 3 with a strikingly similar pair—the Nike Air Force 2. This high-top shoe, launched in the 1980s, may not come close to the popularity of the Air Force 1, but its distinctive look and character have led to numerous model reissues over the years.

The design: It’s impossible to miss the similarities between the Court Force High and the pair Mac wore—a clean white and grey combination with a white leather upper subtly contrasted by grey accents on the collar, tongue, and iconic Swoosh. Standing out on the quarter panels are a considerably greater number of perforations and TPU accents added to its design. Plus, the model features eyelets reminiscent of the AJ2 and AJ3 models.

What we like about it: This model appears to be an intriguing mix of the Air Jordan 1 and Air Jordan 3. Its unique aesthetic certainly offers plenty to marvel at.

Model release date: 1986

Where to buy it: While snatching up an original pair in mint condition could prove challenging, there are a handful of 1986 releases and a considerable number of reissues available on online marketplaces. You might want to consider checking out eBay, GOAT, or StockX for your very own pair.

3. Nike Air Force 3 High

MacGyver Nike Sneakers

The Nike sneakers worn by MacGyver in 1989 are arguably some of the most distinctive amongst the Force family—a range he seemed to be quite fond of. You can spot these bold shoes in Season 5, Episode 17, Deep Cover, when MacGyver, under the guise of a computer hacker named Dexter, gets stuck in a sinking submarine after his cover is exposed by another Phoenix Foundation co-worker.

The design: The colourway worn by Mac boasts a sophisticated dark grey/black leather upper complemented by subtle light grey detailing. Its large brand logos, intricately designed sole, and secure front straps truly set this model apart.

What we like about it: Perhaps the best detail of the sneaker is the iconic Air Force emblem, prominently displayed on the tongue, incorporating a basketball design. This iconic logo gives the shoe a retro and nostalgic feel, adding to its overall appeal.

Model release date: 1988

Where to buy it: You can grab a similar-looking Nike Air Force 3 “Flint Grey” edition from StockX. However, if you are looking for a lighter colour option, there is also an alternative “Wolf Grey” variant available on the GOAT website.

4. Nike Air Delta Force

Nike Air Delta Force

The Nike Air Delta Force is yet another one of the unsung heroes of the ’80s Nike kicks that Macgyver showcased in his iconic TV series. In later episodes of season four, the oft-overlooked Nike Air Delta Force makes an appearance on MacGyver’s feet and makes a brief comeback in season five as well.

The design: These shoes stand out due to their rich leather upper, which has strategically placed perforations on the quarter panels. The sneaker also boasts a very intriguing overlay design.

What we like about it: The Air Delta Force’s design resembles the Air Force 3 High in terms of the straps and logos; however, it has a decidedly more refined aesthetic.

Model release date: 1986

Where to buy it: Fans who wear a size 10.5 or 11.5 might just be lucky enough to snag an original ’86 pair on eBay or Etsy. Otherwise, browse the selection on GOAT for a newer release.

5. Nike Air Jordan 3

MacGyver Nike Sneakers

The Nike Air Jordan 3 is still a coveted pair, even by today’s standards. The beloved model shared screen time with Mac in Season 5, Episode 6, titled Halloween Knights, where you can glimpse the sneaker nestled amongst Mac’s belongings in an airport hangar.

The design: The Air Jordan 3 is renowned for its beautiful leather upper, iconic elephant print on the toe and heel, and the visible Air unit in the heel.

What we like about it: The Air Jordan 3’s sheer beauty and timeless appeal are simply undeniable. It honestly sells itself. Remember, this iconic design was the crucial element that kept Michael Jordan from jumping ship. It’s also noteworthy that the Air Jordan 3 was his first signature shoe to showcase the Jumpman logo, which has since become emblematic of the brand.

Model release date: 1988

Where to buy it: If you want to snag a pair of this desirable silhouette, you can visit places like StockX, GOAT, FlightClub, or the official Nike.com to check out the many different colourways available.

6. Nike Air Jordan 5

MacGyver Nike Sneakers

Amongst the gems in MacGyver’s Nike sneakers collection, the Air Jordan 5 holds a special place. He sported the “Black Metallic” variant in Tough Boys, the first episode of Season 6 – look for it in the boat scene. But once wasn’t enough as he also sports a stunning “Fire Red” colourway in the seventh episode of the seventh season, Good Knight MacGyver, which aired in 1991.

The design: These sneakers are notable for their premium leather exterior and a prominent shark tooth graphic adorning the midsole, a design choice inspired by World War II fighter aircraft. The AJ5 also made sneaker history as the first Air Jordan to incorporate reflective elements, a translucent sole, and a lace-lock system in its stylish design.

What we like about it: The Air Jordan 5, in our opinion, is one of the top picks from MacGyver’s Nike sneaker collection. The shoe’s effortlessly cool vibe is so MacGyver!

Model release date: 1988

Where to buy it: Both colour variants worn by Mac are available for purchase on GOAT, StockX and FlightClub.
