U.S. rapper Wale has always been on the cutting edge when it comes to early releases of Foamposite footwear, and he’s done it again by debuting the new Nike GT Future. At the NBA All-Star 2025 in Oakland, Wale wore an orange colorway of the sneaker. The artist also rocked a second colorway, dubbed “Copper Egg,” during an official Foamposite Galaxy party held in honor of the long-awaited shoe. That’s right: Wale is now at the frontlines of Swoosh’s flagship offering from its Greater Than (GT) series.
Created by Nike Basketball veteran Frank Cooke—who is closely associated with the releases of the Nigel Sylvester x Air Jordan 1, the Air Jordan 1 “Top 3,” and the Air Jordan 1 “Not For Resale”—the Nike GT Future takes cues from the look and feel of basketball sneakers from the early 2000s, particularly the iconic Foamposite and the Nike Zoom Hyperflight line. The sneaker is designed and said to be built for speed, support, and durability. Its upper is a one-piece molded Foamposite, a material that has been manifestly underutilized in sneaker design since the early half of this past decade. And while the GT Future is very much an athletic sneaker and said to be intended as a performer, its looks may beg the question of whether it’s more of a lifestyle model.

Although all three colorways are really great, the “Copper Eggplant” colorway is the one that stands out the most. Wale wore it during the Foamposite Galaxy event, and honestly, it’s like nothing else out there at the moment. If you look carefully, you’ll notice that the upper shifts between copper and eggplant depending on the lighting—which, again, is very similar to the classic Foamposite colorways.
The GT Future, which is coming out in the black colorway, is set to drop in fall 2025. It’s priced at $190 and will be sold at Nike Basketball stockists and online. The GT Future in this colorway hasn’t officially announced a drop date yet. However, that absence of a date has not stopped the sneaker community from crowning the GT Future as one of the most hyped shoes of the moment—perhaps even hailing it as the next big thing for Nike Basketball.
