Nike has made a killing from releasing sneakers that are inspired by the Spider-Verse movies, like the Air Jordan 1 “Origin Story” sneakers released in celebration of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Air Jordan 1 “Next Chapter” (which was amazing and has the best glow-in-the-dark outsoles ever by the way), but they missed an amazing opportunity to make an awesome sneaker inspired by Spider-Punk.
Spider-Punk
Hobart Brown, a.k.a. Hobie or Spider-Punk from Earth-138, is arguably one of the most incredible versions of Spider-Man.
Just like our beloved Peter Parker and Miles Morales, who contracted their superpowers from a spider bite, Spider-Punk gets his when he is bitten by an irradiated spider while living as a teen on the street.
Spider-Punk saves the day on his earth using his Spidey powers and epic punk rock guitar skills. Voiced by Daniel Kaluuya (who is no stranger to the world of Marvel thanks to Black Panther), Spider-Punk made his first feature film debut during the events of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which was everything that fans had hoped for and more.
Fans were so excited to see this character entering the world of the on-screen Spider-Verse that there was hope that a Nike sneaker might be dedicated to his style. Still, these hopes were met with bitter disappointment. Here is the sneaker that Nike should have made…
Spider-Punk Air Jordan Sneakers
We’ve seen the sneakers for “our” Earth’s Miles Morales. We’ve seen the sneakers for a variant of Miles Morales, known as the Prowler (a friend and family exclusive); now, fans want to see something different.
Sharing the shape of the sneakers dedicated to the first and second films, this Spider-Punk sneaker is an Air Jordan 1 silhouette, but this pair swaps out the brightness of the first two sneakers for a much more fitting, dark colourway.
It wouldn’t be Spider-Punk without a darker colour palette, which this colourway’s dark blue and deep red definitely achieves. Let’s start from the top and look at all the little details, shall we?
We get a peak of black around the padded collar and tongue rimmed with red before the sneaker’s upper moves into a deep blue with red accents.
The subtle spider-web pattern on the heel could be mistaken for the texture of the tumbled leather. Still, they have a reflective quality that matches the webbed design inlaid on the mid-foot area of the upper.
The world decal seems fitting, considering Spider-Punk is from a different Earth where he is a hero, and the red matches the accents of the Air Jordan branding, the Nike Swoosh, the laces, and the deep red outsole.
The rim above the midsole is a white rubber that breaks up the darkness of the rest of the sneakers and eludes to the webs of all our favourite web-slingers. In contrast, the midsole matches the deep blue of the rest of the sneakers.
While Nike might have misunderstood the assignment and missed the opportunity to give us this cool sneaker, at least AI knows how to give us what we want.
