If any sneaker company knows a thing or two about returning trends, vintage sneakers, and shoes that give you a sense of nostalgia, it would have to be New Balance. As one of the oldest surviving sneaker brands to date, it should come as no surprise that the branding is jumping on the Y2K fashion trend that is coming back with their Y2K-inspired patent leather New Balance 550 sneakers.
If you have seen our article about some of the best New Balance 550 colourways that have ever walked this earth, you will have seen this gorgeous pair of sneakers because they have remained one of the most highly anticipated colourways since they were announced.
What To Expect From The Y2K-Inspired New Balance 550 Sneakers
Made almost entirely from patent leather and colour-blocked with some of the most vibrant colours that you will ever see on a pair of New Balance 550 shoes, these sneakers have an undeniable Y2K feel to them, perfect for the fashion trends that seem to be returning from that by-gone era, fitting for a range of sneakers that have been around for more than a century.
Start things off strong with a colour-blocked outsole that perfectly combines the pink and lemon zest colours of the colourway. The upper is almost entirely dominated by a lighter shade of pink and the palm leaf shade mentioned in the colourway description. Of course, lemon zest makes a speedy return to the colourway with the bold “N” branding, the heel tab on the back of the sneakers, and the laces.
It isn’t all just a smattering of colour, though. The sneakers also introduce a pure white sock liner, breaking up the colour just enough to make the sneakers look like they haven’t stepped straight out of a 2000s cartoon, like Totally Spies.
It would be an understatement to say that these sneakers make everyone’s Y2K dreams come true with their simultaneously pastel and bright colours.
If green isn’t quite your thing, don’t worry. New Balance brought out a pair with the same patent leather look but a pink and cherry red colourway.
Release Details
If you have already fallen in love with this colourful pair of sneakers, as I have, the good news is that you don’t need to wait to get your hands on a pair. These sneakers, and their pink and red sister, are both already available on newbalance.com for the wonderfully affordable price of $119.99, thanks to their release date being April 1st, 2024.
The bad news is that you might want to grab them before everyone else does, and these sneakers are no longer available on the site. Thankfully, New Balance isn’t in the habit of gatekeeping their sneakers and ramping up the rarity by limiting them. You can find these for a while.
