While 2024 may have provided DC fans with a yearlong commemoration of the Caped Crusader’s 85th anniversary, there is still plenty more to celebrate in 2025. To begin with, this year marks the 20th anniversary of Christopher Nolan’s iconic Batman Begins film, and what better way to commemorate the occasion than with a pair of Nike Air Max 1 sneakers that look like they’ve put on the cape and cowl themselves?
First and foremost, this design is not an official DC/Nike collaboration, though one can hope that might be on the cards someday. This release is more of a subtle nod to the beloved hero characterised by its bold combination of Anthracite, Smoke Grey, Bright Citron, and Black hues.

The shoe’s base is covered in black mesh, while the tongue is made of shiny nylon fabric. Above this sit dark grey suede overlays, with yellow leather wrapping around the mudguard and touching up the side Swooshes. Yellow accents also appear on the branding details, eyelets, and insole for an extra pop of colour. Finishing off the look is a blacked-out sole unit with the Air Unit visible at the heel.
Although the similarity most likely occurred by chance, we’d like to think that one of Beaverton’s designers was drawing inspiration from the Batman comics and animated series—or perhaps Christian Bale’s suit from the Batman Begins films.

In the film, Bale wears a “Nomex survival suit” developed by Wayne Enterprises’ Applied Sciences Division. Essentially, it’s an ashy black tactical outfit with a dark black cape and cowl, along with a gold utility belt. The colours on the sneaker are a touch brighter than what Bale wore in the film, but the likeness is still there. So, if you’re a fan of The Dark Knight, these Nike Air Max 1 sneakers would be a great way to commemorate the film’s 20th anniversary this year.
Among many DC fans, Batman Begins is regarded as the film that resurrected the character’s cinematic status following the underwhelming Batman & Robin from 1997. For better or worse, it brought about a more gritty and realistic take on the superhero genre, which is still prevalent in many modern superhero movies made today. But with James Gunn taking over the reins at DC, perhaps it’s time for a lighter and more comedic approach to the genre again—something bright and beautiful like these AM1 sneakers.

Though you may want to incorporate some blue elements onto the shoes to make them feel like a true nod to the DC character, one Instagram user advises “lace swap to Batman blue”, while another suggests “some blue laces, dark blue sole… logo in blue too…” With a little customisation, these could be the perfect Batman sneakers, as we haven’t seen an actual sneaker collaboration with the hero in quite some time.
So, if you want to get your hands on these Batman-inspired sneakers, they’ll be available for $145 USD on Nike.com and at select retailers in fall 2025.
