There’s no doubt that Nike is pulling out all the stops with this year’s “Year of the Dragon” themed sneaker series. They’ve taken some of their most popular models and given them awe-inspiring updates, playing around with different colours and material finishes for ultimate variety. Standing out amongst the lineup of kicks is the spectacular Nike KD 4 “Year of the Dragon 2.0”, a perfect embodiment of this year’s theme.

Of course, Kevin Durant’s signature shoe range is no stranger to Dragon Year specials. Think back to 2012 – I know, it feels like a lifetime ago. But that’s when Nike first launched the original “Year of the Dragon” KD 4 to mark that year’s Chinese New Year’s celebrations. This original design flaunted a unique blend of “Green Abyss, ” “Dark Mango, ” and “Current Blue, ” giving a nod to the water dragon.

However, this year’s dragon-themed release brings a fresh perspective paying tribute to the wood dragon (yes, there are five types of dragons in Chinese culture each representing various elements.) The design arrives on the scene in hues of “Khaki, ” “Noble Red, ” “Sesame, ” “Cacao Wow, ” and “Gum Yellow, ” a perfect scheme for a colourway celebrating the Chinese New Year.

The majority of this sneaker sports an unassumingly elegant “Khaki” shade, subtly enhanced with touches of “Sesame” on elements such as the tongue branding, mesh panels, and lockdown strap. However, the lockdown strap doesn’t simply cover itself in this soft hue. Instead, it goes a step further with a brown, woodgrain-style pattern that pays tribute to the symbolic wood dragon. Adding a vibrant touch to the otherwise muted palette, a striking “Noble Red” Swoosh dominates the side of the strap.

However, the exquisitely embroidered co-branding on the heel, realized in a ‘Cacao Wow’ colour, gives this iteration an edge over its predecessor. This branding is artfully interwoven with a dragon motif wrapped around the Nike Swoosh on the medial ankle. At the same time, the dragon’s tail sneaks across the back of the heel behind the KD branding, resulting in a memorable co-branding moment. Completing the aesthetic, there’s a striking fusion of a “Sesame” midsole coupled with a “Gum Yellow” outsole that seamlessly blends into the overall colour narrative of the shoe.

Sneaker enthusiasts can expect these stunning sneakers to arrive in an elegant brown box, accompanied by a golden string bag. The box and bag showcase majestic dragon detailing, honouring the sneaker’s theme. And let’s not overlook the intriguing addition of a hang tag made from wooden beads that can be hung from the side of the shoe as added adornment. Needless to say, every fine detail makes this dragon release all the more compelling.

The good news is that the wait for this extraordinary pair of kicks won’t be much longer. Scheduled to roll out on February 3, 2024, the Nike KD, 4 “Year of the Dragon 2.0, can be secured via Nike.com or refer to select Nike Basketball retailers for availability. The shoes will be released in men’s sizes, and the price tag is a pleasing $150 USD.

Seeing such a stunning creation makes us more eager to uncover what else Nike and KD have in store for his signature shoe line in 2024. They’re pretty creative when it comes to launching unique shades for holidays and special occasions. Hence, we are always excited to uncover their latest creations. Until then, stay tuned with us for more sneaker drops and to see what 2024 has in store for us in the Nike KD lineup.
