If you’ve ever wanted your sneakers to double as a warning sign, Nike’s new yellow and black Shox TL has you covered. One glance and you’re thinking wasp, bee, or maybe even the Pittsburgh Steelers charging down the field.
The Shox TL isn’t exactly new, but it’s one of those silhouettes that has aged into cult status. Originally launched in the early 2000s, it was marketed as peak tech-runner swagger. It’s the kind of shoe that looked like it could launch you into orbit. Now, more than twenty years later, Nike Sportswear has decided it still has some sting left in it.
The latest colorway, “Black/University Gold,” leans hard into the contrast. The bulk of the sneaker is drenched in black, while the yellow accents hit all the right spots, like the swoosh, the tongue details, the spine, and those eye-catching overlays. It’s the kind of sneaker that works just as well with all-black fits as it does in a Steelers fan’s game-day lineup.

If you’re not familiar with the TL (short for “Total”), it takes the Shox R4’s iconic bounce and stretches it into something even bolder. A full-length system of Shox columns runs across the sole, making the sneaker instantly recognizable from a mile away. It used to be known as a performance runner, but it didn’t take long for the Shox TL to get hijacked by fashion heads who cared less about marathons and more about making sure people noticed what was on their feet.
Nike has been on a revival spree lately, dusting off silhouettes from the early 2000s and giving them a fresh spin for 2025. The Shox TL slides right into that lane. It’s nostalgic enough to trigger memories of Total 90 soccer gear, but updated just enough to fit today’s streets. The same people who begged their parents for Shox in 2003 are now buying them with their own money in 2025. And Nike knows it.
The new Nike Shox TL is set to drop in October for $170 via Nike.com.
