In September 2024, the Jordan Brand will bring us a new and unique colourway to celebrate something monumental. It will be a fresh take on the Air Jordan 5 and all about Mexico, one of the most colourful and storied countries in the world. The sneakers, called the Air Jordan 5 “El Grito”, are a stylish and poignant tribute to Mexican Independence Day. Translated directly, the words’ El Grito’ mean ‘The Cry’ and refer, in this context, to El Grito de Dolores (you guessed it: The Cry of Dolores), which is the day – on September 16, 1810 – when the Roman Catholic priest, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, sounded the bell that began the call that launched the Mexican War of Independence.
The Cry of Dolores
Given Mexico’s rich heritage, it is fitting that the Air Jordan 5 – a shoe steeped in history and cultural significance – would be the sneaker to commemorate this significant day through the “El Grito” colourway. It’s more than just a sneaker; it symbolises Mexican pride and resilience. Mexico’s fight for independence was a long and bloody one. Still, it ultimately led to the creation of a free and sovereign nation. The “El Grito” pays homage to this struggle and reminds us of the importance of fighting for our beliefs.
The Air Jordan 5 “El Grito” is inspired by the original “Black/Metallic” colourway that His Airness wore during the 1990 NBA Playoffs. This was the year before the Bulls won the first of three chips that would make up their first 3-peat, so one might call this one the shoe that marked the darkest night before dawn. Isn’t it true that, in some sense, Mexico is a nation with so much untapped potential, fighting through all forms of adversity on its way to a brighter day?

Air Jordan 5 “El Grito” Design & Features
The sneaker’s upper features the same suede/nubuck construction we’ve seen in other colourways in a sleek, earthy dark brown and dusty grey scheme. The sole is semi-translucent with suede overlays and the same beloved mesh siding we’ve seen before. The iconic Jumpman logo makes an appearance on the tongue, and in that same area, we see a green lacelock.
This green lacelock is symbolic, and its meaning should be noticed. This colour is the only one from the Mexican national flag that makes it onto the shoe, so there must be a reason for it. Sure enough, green stands for independence, tying in perfectly with what this sneaker is all about. When you look at all these elements together, you’re getting something that represents deep heritage, a connectedness to earth and history, making this shoe a worthy piece to add to any serious sneakerhead’s collection.
