While it’s true that the Jordan Spizike Low has drawn on iconic design elements from several celebrated Air Jordan models, it’s also managed to assert its own identity within the Jordan Brand lineup. Its newly launched silhouette (notably, the original model features a slightly elevated collar area), combined with a string of successful releases in various colourways, has solidified this model’s position as one of the most beloved hybrids in just its first year of production. Yet, nodding to its roots, the upcoming Jordan Spizike Low “Lightning” colourway pays homage to an esteemed Air Jordan 4 colourway of the same name.
A Closer Look at the Jordan Spizike Low “Lightning”
Let’s take a moment to appreciate the bold blend of “Varsity Maize,” “Black,” “Wolf Grey,” “Pure Platinum,” and “White” hues on the upcoming release. Can we just marvel at how beautifully this colourway transposes the AJ 4 Retro “Lightning” aesthetics onto the beloved hybrid silhouette? This colour scheme first made waves in 2006, emerging alongside a “Thunder” variant. As it goes, Michael Jordan’s Motorsports squad inspired both of these designs – just one of many of his Royal Airness’s passions.
Most of the upper is covered in a smooth “Varsity Maize” toned leather, harmoniously complemented by matching elephant print details on the toe and heel areas (a nod to the AJ3) and yellow accents on the wing tabs (a feature you might recognise from the AJ4). However, the bold yellow tones are perfectly balanced out with “Wolf Grey” and “Black” accents in the finer details of the shoe, with the tongue then overlaid in a crisp “White” leather.
Other noteworthy features you’d be keen on are Spike Lee’s distinct logos represented by the Mars Blackmon portrait and the emblem of the 40 Acres and a Mule Filmwork placed on the shoe’s circular heel overlays. In case you were wondering, these details were added in tribute to Spike Lee’s character, Mars Blackmon, whose memorable commercials were just as iconic as the Air Jordan shoes they promoted.
Not to forget, the shoe’s design itself is a combination of elements from kicks tied to Mars Blackmon’s screen appearances. Hence, you’ll likely spot elements from the Air Jordan 3, 4, 5, 6, and 20 on this hybrid sneaker. But enough with the history, let’s get back into the design.
The sneaker’s look is completed with a yellow and black midsole highlighted by speckles on the yellow portion, as well as a translucent outsole underneath. Naturally, it’s impossible to miss the visible Air units in the heel, a design element shared with the AJ 3’s and succeeding models up to AJ 6.
