90s sitcoms have become synonymous with sneaker nostalgia. Two standout characters include Martin’s Martin Payne and, of course, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’s Will Smith. But people tend to overlook young Cory Matthews from Boy Meets World. Played by Ben Savage, this was a kid with some serious street style. Certified sneakerhead @djaycue’s recent Instagram post highlights the teen’s rotation, and commenters were quick to start reminiscing:
@vi.vi.mcmxcii: “Okay NOW we’re talking. Cory’s rotation was clean”
@dezway_x: “The shoes plus Topanga that’s a win 🤷🏾♂️😂”
@kurseaan: “Them tailwinds 🔥”
NSS Magazine even ranked Cory third on its list of the best sneakerheads from 90s sitcoms, behind only Will Smith and Jerry Seinfeld. So, let’s look at the shoes that made Cornelius (Cory) Matthews the object of adolescent sneaker envy.

Nike Air Maestro: The Sneakers Cory Wore in the Boy Meets World Pilot (1992)

Episodes: 1, 19, 43 (Seasons 1-2)
| Colorway | Black/White (launch colorway) |
| Style code | Not found for the OG |
| Release date | October 1992 (Holiday 1992) |
| Retail price | Not found |
| Resale value | No current market data; OGs sell sporadically on eBay and Grailed |
Cory’s sneaker story begins in the pilot episode, when he wears a pair of Air Maestros to his first day of sixth grade — talk about making a statement. Mr. Feeny wasn’t impressed, but Topanga (Cory’s love interest) definitely took notice.
Nike released the shoe in late 1992, so it was brand new when the show premiered. The Huarache-style sock-like fit made it stand out from the stiffer basketball shoes of the time.
The Maestros come back in episodes 19 and 43, which makes them one of the few pairs Cory wore across more than one season.
Availability: Unfortunately, you won’t find this pair in stores. Nike has never given the originals a faithful retro, but OGs do turn up on resale sites like eBay and Grailed now and again. However, the Maestro II is a lot easier to find, as it was retroed in 2018.
Air Jordan 8 “Bugs”: Cory’s Most-Worn Season 1 Sneaker (1993)

Episodes: 3, 5, 14, 17, 20 (Season 1)
| Colorway | White/Black/True Red |
| Style code | 305381-100 |
| Release date | December 20, 2025 |
| Retail price | $215 |
| Resale value | About $156–$215 on StockX and $178–$240 on GOAT, depending on size. Most mid-range sizes sit around $160–$180 on StockX, near or below retail. |
After the first few episodes, Cory’s sneaker game starts getting pretty serious. And what’s more serious than Bugs Bunny?
The Jordan VIII was famously designed by Tinker Hatfield in 1993, built with X-shaped straps across the forefoot with no Nike branding in sight. This White, Black, and True Red pair picked up the ‘Bugs’ nickname from Jordan’s Looney Tunes commercials that featured Bugs Bunny.
In season one, Cory wears them in five episodes — making them his most worn shoe that year. A Jordan on a Philly kid in 1993 was a bold move, but Savage pulled them off seamlessly.
Availability: Jordan Brand brought the ‘Bugs’ back in December 2025, its first return in 12 years. You can still sometimes find pairs from the 2025 drop (and previous drops) on resale platforms like StockX and GOAT.
Nike Air Max2 CB ’94: Charles Barkley’s Signature Shoe on Cory (1994)

Episodes: 34, 39, 41, 42, 43, and 44 (Season 2)
| Colorway | Black/Varsity Royal/White |
| Style code | IX4182-010 |
| Release date | August 14, 2026 |
| Retail price | $160 |
| Resale value | About $149 (3-month average) and $179 (last sale) on StockX |
If it wasn’t obvious already, the Air Max2 CBs told audiences that Cory was definitely the show’s main character. The sneakers showed up at plenty of peak moments in the teen’s life, including at wrestling practice, getting into fights, and standing up to bullies.
Debuting in 1994, the Air Max2 CB was basketball legend Charles Barkley’s signature shoe. The straightjacket-inspired design was made to match Barkley’s explosive playing style, and introduced some truly revolutionary tech.
When they dropped, they retailed for a premium price and sold well enough to make them worthy of their Hall of Fame association.
Availability: The Nike Air Max2 CB ’94 has been retroed several times and is easy to find at major sneaker boutiques and on resale sites. You can easily secure them in classic colorways like ‘Black/Varsity Royal’.
Nike Air Reversal: Cory’s Wrestling Sneakers in “The Thrilla’ in Phila’” (1995)

Episodes: 43 (Season 2)
| Colorway | Black |
| Style code | Not found |
| Release date | Mid-1990s (it appears in a May 1995 episode); never retroed |
| Retail price | Not found |
| Resale value | No reliable market data; the shoe rarely appears on StockX or GOAT |
In the show’s 43rd episode titled “The Thrilla’ in Phila’,” which aired in May 1995, Cory is seen lacing up a pair of black Nike Air Reversals before his wrestling match. The boot-style shoe was built for maximum ankle support and mat traction.
In the very same episode, Shawn is seen rocking the classic Nike Air Veer. And let’s not forget about Eric, who heads into the wrestling match showing off an iconic pair of Air Jordan 9 ‘Olive’. It was an episode that went down in sneakerhead history.
Availability: As far as we can tell, the Nike Air Reversal has never been retroed, so you won’t find them on the shelves. You probably won’t even find them on the usual resale platforms. Those prepared to pay top dollar can try getting in touch with collectors on Instagram and eBay.

Airwalk Jim: Cory’s Skate Shoe Era in Seasons 5 and 6 (Early 90s)
Episodes: 90, 122 (Season 5 and 6)
| Colorway | Not found |
| Style code | Not found |
| Release date | Early 1990s |
| Retail price | Not found |
| Resale value | No reliable market data |
This casual skate shoe was quite the departure from Cory’s usual basketball and wrestling drip. But it makes sense when you look at the evolution of his character. In seasons 5 and 6, he was finishing high school and heading to college, and the pared-back style mirrored more grounded storylines.
Shawn also had plenty of skate shoe moments, including the Airwalk Enigma and The Simple Sneaker Co. Clogs. Later seasons seemed to be defined by more laidback looks.
But back to the Jim. Released in the early 90s, the shoe soon became a staple in the skate scene. They were cool then and they’re even cooler now.
Availability: You won’t find the Airwalk Jim in any regular retail outlets. However, you could try your luck on vintage marketplaces to track down a secondhand pair.
Why Cory Matthews Is an Accidental 90s Sneaker Style Icon

Look back at Cory’s rotation, and you’ll notice that all the best pairs appeared early on. The Air Maestros, Jordan VIIIs, Barkley Max2 CBs, and Air Reversals all landed in the first two seasons, while the Airwalks were the only standout from later years.
Nobody was trying to turn Cory into a style icon. The costume department just dressed him like a real 90s kid, and his real clout only came to light in hindsight. On the Pod Meets World podcast, costume designer Julie Yang Silver, who joined the show in season three, talked about dressing the cast, and the entire cast’s sneakers were on point from the start.
The timing is right, too: Doc Meets World, a documentary about the Pod Meets World cast, premiered at the Tribeca Festival in June 2026.
More than 30 years later, sneakerheads are still giving tween Cory the thumbs up.
