It hasn’t been the best of times for Timothée Chalamet in the last few months. Between his loss at the Oscars, his comments on ballet, and shots back from other actors (like Charlize Theron), he’s been under fire lately. Sometimes it’s best to lie low during those moments and let the storm clear. And that’s what he seems to be doing. He appeared courtside recently at Madison Square Garden supporting the New York Knicks in Game 2 of their playoff series against the Atlanta Hawks. And while he wasn’t there to make a fuss, the internet is talking about Timothée Chalamet’s Adidas Stan Smith sneakers.
In photographs that have shown up on social media, we can see the 29-year-old Marty Supreme actor wearing a clean white pair of the sneakers – nothing really flashy – just a minimalist white leather pair with green accents here and there. It’s not the kind of shoe that’s really flashy, but still, they’ve gotten a lot of attention from fans and haters.
The Adidas Stan Smith has a very long history that dates back to 1973, when the tennis player with the same name wore them during games. Before that, of course, it was named after Robert Haillet. But that changed. In an interview from 2023, Stan Smith himself spoke about his connection to the shoe. “It was in ‘72 when we made the agreement. The shoe came out in ’73… I was the number-one player in the world at the time, and American. They were looking for a good face to put on the tongue,” he said.
And while they aren’t Jordans, the Stan Smith has done some serious numbers. In fact, by 1989, the shoe had sold more than 22 million pairs and even broke the Guinness World Records record.
But by 2011, Adidas took the sneaker off the shelves. They disappeared completely for a time. Two years later, in 2013, Adidas decided to relaunch them for its 40th anniversary. And suddenly it had new life again, and everyone wanted a pair.
They’ve cooled off again over the years, but now it seems Timothée Chalamet might be instrumental in bringing back the classic once again in 2026.

Instagram sneakerheads had plenty of opinions too, like “Stan Smith is always a classic”, “great shoe”, and “one of the most uncomfortable shoes ever.”
The Adidas Stan Smith sneakers won’t die. It probably never will. With so many celebrities and famous figures turning to it as their go-to sneaker, it might outlive us all. Chalamet might know that too. Afterall, this is a guy who has made it his business to keep up with trends.
