The Levi’s x Air Jordan 3 “Raw Indigo Denim” has been delayed. After early pairs popped up at Super Bowl LX in San Francisco and NBA All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles, Saturday’s wider launch was a huge deal and felt like a sure thing. The Black Denim colorway dropped from most retailers and on Nike’s SNKRS app. The Rigid Indigo pair, however, is quietly gone. Then the photos started circulating.
Sneakerheads are taking to social media to show plenty of blue denim uppers covered in what looks like mold. That’s not distressing or artistic flair. They’re actual mold splotches. Instagram was on fire: “Hook me up with the blue cheese 3’s.” Another seemed to like the look, “I’d actually rock em like that.” It seems sneakerheads have a sense of humor, even when $230 is on the line.
Retailer Premium Goods didn’t joke around, however. “Due to quality control issues we will not launch the rigid blue tomorrow. We will only be launching black,” the store posted on Instagram. Soon after, pairs disappeared from other stockists and SNKRS without comment.
Jordan Brand eventually addressed it. “We were recently made aware that a small number of Levi’s AJ3 Indigo colorway units do not meet Jordan Brand’s high-quality standards. We are working to resolve the issue and replace impacted products.”
So, yes, something went very wrong in the production of these shoes.
Of course this isn’t the first time. In 2022, some Lost and Found Air Jordan 1 pairs had mold issues, too. The 2015 Air Jordan 1 KO Bred faced similar complaints. Even Tom Sachs’ Nike General Purpose Shoe wasn’t immune in 2022 and 2023.
It’s rare, sure. But not unheard of, no.
The frustrating part is that the shoe itself is beautiful. Raw indigo denim replaces the traditional leather upper. Black leather wraps the mudguard, collar, and heel. Red Jumpman logos pop off the tongue, while white Nike Air branding anchors the heel tab. Elephant print stays black. Cream accents give it that slightly aged feel without trying too hard. There’s even the promise that over time, that denim would have faded and creased uniquely to you.
Sneakerheads on Instagram want answers. “So does that mean the pair I purchased directly from Levi’s won’t ship until April?” Rumors suggest April 1, thanks to @zsneakerheadz. Others are wondering if stores holding stock have inspected their pairs yet.
Nike may clean up the issue and re-release. Maybe as B-grades at outlets. Maybe not at all.
For now, the blue denim 3s are sitting out. Probably in a warehouse. Hopefully not growing anything else.
