The world of custom sneakers is fascinating, with sneakers being made every day that are inspired by the gorgeous silhouettes that brands have created, as well as pop culture icons from around the world. Magic is made every time these stunning worlds collide, and that is precisely what happened with these Stan Lee x Nike SB Dunk Low Recon sneakers.

These gorgeous sneakers were designed initially by Dariyn Enriquez (of @dope_don_designs fame) for the Reverse Land and NikeSBorNothing Pop Culture design contest, where they made it to the Top Vote of Honourable Mention. More than a year later, the gorgeous concept sneakers were made physically in April, and Reverse Land added them to their website for open commissions.
The story behind the sneakers is almost just as beautiful as the sneakers themselves. Their position in the competition is what sparked @dope_don_designs’ journey in posting his designs for the world to see on Instagram, so we have this competition to thank for all the gorgeous designs that we get to enjoy.
Enough about that, though; let’s look at the sneakers themselves. Starting from the bottom, the sneakers use a gorgeous tan rubber outsole topped by a white coffee-dyed rubber midsole. You are about to see many coffee-dyed moments throughout the sneakers.
Moving onto the upper, the sneakers use smooth, coffee-dyed (you were warned) white leather on all of their overlays. They also have a base made of coffee-dyed leather sections printed with black-and-white comic images. The lace unit, laces, and collar area all take on the same tan shade seen on the rubber outsole.
The accents throughout the sneakers, including the lace ribbon, the inner lining of the tongue, the Nike Swoosh and the heel tab on the back, all take on a gorgeous satin texture with a burnt-orange hue. The tongue tags each say “STAN” and “LEE” respectively, while the heel tab says “’NUFF” and “SAID”.
The deep brown corduroy inner lining is a perfect way to ground the otherwise mostly light sneakers.
Finally, an image of Stan Lee and the names and publication years of many of his comic books and characters are scrawled across the insoles, offering a tribute to the fantastic comic book creator that left one of the most significant impacts on the world.
What we like about them
Stan Lee is an icon, and anything that is made in his honour is worthy of praise, but the way that this gorgeous tribute was brought to life is astounding. The coffee-dyed aspect gives the sneakers an aged and vintage look that fits the vintage comics that the amazing creator had a hand in creating.
The sneakers are gorgeous and affordable as far as customs go, and it’s amazing that sneakers made in tribute to an artistic icon sparked the artistic journey of another icon in a different but still artistic field.
