Nike celebrated Air Max Day on March 26th, and as part of the celebration, they released the next generation of Air Max sneakers, the Air Max Dn8. Improving their already gorgeous design, the Air Max Dn now features Dynamic Air, a dual-chamber with a “four-tubed Nike Air unit design for unreal comfort, a smooth stride and max bounce.” We decided to take a trip down memory lane and remember some of history’s best Nike Air Max colourways.

1. Air Max 97 OG QS “Silver Bullet”

Air Max 97 OG QS “Silver Bullet”

Looking at these ultra-sleek silver sneakers, it is almost impossible not to see that they are inspired by Japanese bullet trains. Having been first released in 1997, it is far more accessible these days to get your hands on one of the 20th anniversary rereleased pairs or the restock from 2022, but it’s easy to see why. With a visible air unit that runs along the bottom of the sneakers, layers of metallic silver mesh and shiny leather, and an outsole that gives the sneakers a distinctly futuristic feel, these sneakers are a beloved entry to any collection.

2. Nike Air Max Uptempo 95 “Lakers”

Nike Air Max Uptempo 95 “Lakers”

You don’t get a name like “Lakers” in the basketball and sneaker worlds without being inspired by the legendary Los Angeles NBA franchise. These sneakers have a retro blend and are one of few silhouettes in the Air Max range created for basketball rather than the Air Max’s usual practice of making sneakers for runners.

Besides the revolutionary Air cushioning system that made these sneakers a hit in many sports spheres, the sneakers are a breath of fresh air regarding style and how they scream “team spirit,” celebrating one of the greatest teams ever.

3. Nike Air Max Sensation “Black Royal” (CW)

Nike Air Max Sensation “Black Royal” (CW)

These sneakers first made their way onto the sneaker circuit in the 1990s. They were made for C-Webb during his short stint with Nike. We all know the controversy surrounding his untimely exit from Nike due to a disagreement on how the company marketed said sneakers, but that doesn’t stop the pair and colourway from being a fan favourite.

The sneakers’ short stint on shelves is why getting your hands on a pair of these sneakers can be tricky and why the prices can often range in the thousands for a pair of even used sneakers.

4. Parra X Air Max 1 “Albert Heijn”

Parra X Air Max 1 “Albert Heijn”

This gorgeous mix of white, orange, and blue was designed and planned for release in 2005 to honour the Dutch supermarket chain of the same name. Still, there was a miscommunication between the brand and Nike. Shortly after the sneakers were released, Albert Heijn’s branding went through a complete change, and when it did, the sneakers no longer matched the brand.

Rather than insulting the brand by calling back to their old branding so recently, Nike decided to scrap the sneaker design and gave the 24 pairs they had created to the Dutch artist Piet Parra’s friends and family after they had made the change. With only 24 genuine articles worldwide, this pair quickly became one of the rarest Nike Air Max sneakers ever. This does, unfortunately, mean that it is nearly impossible to get your hands on a pair of your own. However, there is always hope that Nike or Parra will take pity on the sneaker community that still loves this look and retro them in the future.

5. Travis Scott X Air Max 1 “Cactus Jack Baroque Brown”

Travis Scott X Air Max 1 “Cactus Jack Baroque Brown”

Anything created in collaboration with Travis Scott and Cactus Jack is bound to be a showstopper; let’s be honest with ourselves. Despite being flamboyant in his style choices, which have made him a fashion icon beyond just his music, many of the sneakers he creates in collaboration with Nike are understated, gorgeously wearable and versatile.

The same can be said for the Travis Scott X Air Max 1 “Cactus Jack Baroque Brown”, a pair of stunning retro runners with a rugged outdoor look that isn’t out of place when worn outside the confines of the inspiring environment. The combination of tan, off-white, brown and red makes these sneakers gorgeous for any occasion, and the Travis Scott branding makes them a highly sought-after pair of sneakers.

6. Sean Wotherspoon Air Max 1/97

Sean Wotherspoon Air Max 1/97

To say these sneakers are gorgeous would be a gross understatement of their design and fame over the years. Often selling for more than $1,000 on resale sites like Farfetch, they are considered a staple in the line.

Taking an exciting detour from the usual materials that make up the Air Max 1/97, the Sean Wotherspoon variation not only plays with a range of colours like tan, grey, pink, light and dark blue, and even forest green and chocolatey brown but each layer of the multi-layered pair of sneakers’ upper is made of corduroy instead of the usually leather or mesh. A splash of colour and texture, these sneakers are gorgeous.

7. Parra X Nike Air Max 1 “Amsterdam”

Parra X Nike Air Max 1 “Amsterdam”

Created in collaboration with Nike at the same time as the previously mentioned “Albert Heijn” colourway, this pair is another unique edition design that is loved and lauded for its unique look and distinct colourway. Combining gorgeous tones like brownstone, blue reef, and dark oak, the sneakers are adorned with the Amsterdam crest on the heel, making them a gorgeous tribute to the home country of the artist who designed them.

Looking below these sneakers, you’ll see they average at a pretty exorbitant price. They are widely considered a collector’s item and a piece of art rather than a pair of sneakers you might always wear out. This is because finding a pair of these is incredibly rare. Scarcity is one of the leading factors when it comes to the Price of sneakers on the market, and this pair was rumoured to have had a pretty limited release, with only 200-300 sneakers being in existence. Good luck, and happy hunting if you want to add this pair to your collection.

8. Nike Air Max Terrascape Plus “Pure White”

Nike Air Max Terrascape Plus “Pure White”

When considering the name “Nike Air Max Terrascape”, you might imagine that these sneakers are made for rough outdoor conditions like hiking through snow or some of the more challenging terrains your life might take you to. Still, these sneakers were actually tailored for urban exploration.

The earthy, organic feel to the sneakers is part of their charm, as is the versatile colour palette of each pair and the contemporary style of the sneakers. The “Pure White” variation of the sneakers features mesh, embroidery, leather, semi-transparent TPU, speckled foam and the signature clear windows that allow you to see into the technology that makes up the construction of the sneakers, giving the pair an almost alien or futuristic theme despite its undeniable terrestrial inspirations.

9. Air Max 90 “Warhawk”

Air Max 90 “Warhawk”

With a name like “Warhawk,” it’s easy to see where this pair of Nike Air Max 90 sneakers was inspired: the infamous World War II Pursuit (fighter) Plane, dubbed the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk.

Not only do they have an inspiration that is near and dear to the history of the world, but the sneakers are also special editions with symbols and characteristics that make them unique. The sneakers are characterised by their unique design, which tends to include “teeth” along the upper and midsole, as well as a tiger shark print in honour of the Flying Tigers—a group of American pilots who volunteered to defend China from Japan before the US entered the fray that was WWII.

10. Air Max Lunar 90 SP “Moon Landing”

Air Max Lunar 90 SP “Moon Landing”

Inspired by another monumental moment in history, the Air Max Lunar 90 SP “Moon Landing” follows the beautiful trend of having a name that makes it easy to see where Nike drew inspiration. More than four decades ago, the intense moment when the world held its breath as Neil Armstrong managed to be the first human to walk on the moon inspired this gorgeous pair of sneakers.

In paying homage to one of mankind’s most outstanding achievements as a species, these sneakers feature a pattern of lunar prints on their uppers and stars and stripe details at the heel for an extra patriotic touch. Despite only having debuted in 2014, nowhere near the time of the event, the sneakers sold out almost immediately and remain popular on resale sites worldwide.

11. Air Max 97 “On Air: Shanghai Kaleidoscope”

Air Max 97 “On Air: Shanghai Kaleidoscope”

Nike is famously known for its “On Air” initiative, which pushed the company to be more sustainable while preserving innovation and science. That initiative has been the launching point for many unique sneakers in its growing collection.

As part of this initiative, Cash Ru from Shanghai inspired the public with his design of the Air Max 97 “On Air: Shanghai Kaleidoscope.” The sneakers are aptly named, as they are eye-catching and gorgeous while still being true to Cash Ru’s roots in Shanghai. On the sneakers, the city’s horizon and the gorgeous sky are represented.

Cash Ru’s sneakers would be chosen as one of six winners from 18 finalists selected across six cities – New York, London, Paris, Seoul, Shanghai, and Tokyo.

12. Atmos X Nike Air Max 95 “Animal Pack”

Atmos X Nike Air Max 95 “Animal Pack”

Talking about just one of the pairs of sneakers in this pack would be a crime, as the Atmos x Nike Air Max 95 “Animal Pack” is an absolute showstopper. Featuring sneakers inspired by a mix of faux tiger, leopard, zebra, and pony panels, each of the sneakers in the pack has a wild and eye-catching look that is bound to leave people needing to double-take when wearing a pair.

While the original pack made an undeniable splash in 2006, the 2018 rereleased collection did the same when it swapped out the black accents throughout the sneakers for an updated and luxurious ivory look. This added distinction to the sneakers and separated those who got them at different time intervals to let each iteration have a moment to shine.

13. Air Max 1 OG “Anniversary” 2017

Air Max 1 OG “Anniversary” 2017

As the name suggests, these sneakers were released as part of the anniversary celebration of the day the influential Air Max 1 OG line debuted, paying homage to the iconic design with a classic white, red, and grey colourway. This iconic version of the Air Max 1 features a gorgeous combination of suede and mesh upper for breathability and comfort that you won’t find in any other running sneaker, complemented by a light-weight and cushiony foam midsole and the signature visible Air cushioned unit in the heel. You can’t find a more classic look in the Air Max 1 sneaker collection, and these sneakers are a staple that is still sought-after.

14. Air Max 90 “Photon Dust”

Air Max 90 “Photon Dust”

Nike has a way of making their monochromatic sneakers one-of-a-kind and gorgeous, and the Air Max 90 “Photon Dust” wasn’t left out of this practice. Despite the understated colourway, the sneakers are still stunning and head-turning thanks to their classic design and contemporary comfort blend.

Not straying too far from their tried-and-true formula of combining leather and mesh materials to make their sneakers breathable and sturdy, the Air Max 90 continues to be a staple in the sneaker world. One of the best parts about the sneakers is their availability and affordability on resale markets. Sure, they aren’t one of the most expensive sneakers out there and might not be one of the most sought-after due to their abundance on the market. Still, the soft “Photon Dust” colourway is undeniably one of the most gorgeous any sneakerhead deserves to enjoy.

15. Air Max 90 “Bacon”

Air Max 90 “Bacon”

Who doesn’t love a good breakfast food? Sometimes, sneakers inspired by the simplest pleasures are the best, and that is precisely the case with the Air Max 90 “Bacon” sneakers. To sit here and talk about a pair of sneakers inspired by food that is so widely loved seems almost strange. The history behind sneakers is fascinating, nonetheless.

Created in collaboration with artists Dave Ortiz and Chris Keefe from “Dave’s Quality Meat”, the Air Max 90 “Bacon” first emerged on the sneaker circuit in 2004 and was brought back for a rerelease for Air Max Day 2021, which is a version of the sneakers that is far easier for sneakerheads to get their hands on these days.

The inspiration might seem a little ridiculous, but you can’t deny that it works and works well. On a different note, all those in favour of Nike bringing out an entire range of breakfast foods, the Air Max 90 range, raise your hand (and I will raise mine with you).

16. Nike Air Max Penny I

Nike Air Max Penny I

This highly sought-after signature line marked when Nike’s Air Max sneakers entered a broader market. Featuring advanced Air Max cushioning in the heel, the Nike Air Max Penny I made an immediate impact on the sneaker world. I earned the respect of footwear lovers everywhere, just like the man that they were designed for.

These sneakers are one of few variations that have stood the test of time and are still available in many colourways on Nike. With new variations being added each year, a pair of these sneakers is a boon to any sneakerhead’s collection.

17. Nike Air Max 97 “Be True”

Nike Air Max 97 “Be True”

Another pair of sneakers that you can still purchase straight from the Nike website without having to venture into uncertain waters like aftermarket sites, the Nike Air Max 97 “Be True” doesn’t have a long-standing history like many of the sneakers on this list, but it is still an essential part of sneaker culture.

The rainbow-inspired look is an obvious nod to LGBTQIA+ history. At the same time, the sneaker combines elements like smooth leather and suede with multiple colours of lace and frills to make a sweet pair of sneakers that harkens back to the many who have fought to give people the rights they have today. One of the best details about the sneakers might seem like an afterthought to many. Still, the bit detachable charm near the foot’s arch reads “Be True” in rainbow beads with a little star as a separator. Not all will agree that these sneakers are necessary for your sneaker collection. Still, the detail and love that went into creating the sneakers is undeniable. If you are looking for something completely different from anything you might have seen before, you will find it in these sneakers.

18. Off-White X Air Max 90 “Desert Ore”

Off-White X Air Max 90 “Desert Ore”

When you combine Off-White and Nike, you can never truly go wrong, and the Off-White X Air Max 90 “Desert Ore” is a striking testament to that fact.

Off-white has always had an undeniably signature look, but the “Desert Ore” is one of the instances when the collaboration has appeared at its most subtle. The sole unit and upper of these gorgeous sneakers are one solid colour, devoid of the usual writing and “labels” that make up the Off-White branding. However, the decorative stitching, thoughtful adaptations, and the little turquoise label above the Nike Swoosh still undeniably categorise these sneakers as an Off-White x Nike collaboration.

The sneakers’ subtleties are beautifully offset by the bright coral Nike Swoosh, which works more with them than against them, making it a gorgeous and sought-after pair.

These sneakers are among the few that feature an entirely clear midsole. This allows the entire Air unit trapped within the sole to be on full display, adding a unique look and giving the sneakers a futuristic feel.

20. Undefeated Air Max 97 OG “White”

Undefeated Air Max 97 OG “White”

Looking at these sneakers, you might only sometimes see what all the fuss is about. They are a white pair of sneakers that look pretty much the same as any other Air Max 97 sneaker, but what makes these sneakers unique is the Undefeated label that surrounds the upper on red and green trim that matches the usual contours of the silhouette.

It might be simple, but the result is one of the most recognisable sneakers ever. Owning a pair of these as part of your collection isn’t much of a fight. You can easily find a pair for just over double the price it initially went for upon its release.
