Nike never misses an opportunity to celebrate- a quality we absolutely love about the brand. Be it a tribute to beloved holidays or a nod towards significant historical events, the Swoosh Label consistently knows how to honour these milestones through the art of its shoe designs. A beautiful example of this is the Nike Air Max 1 ’86 “Jackie Robinson” – a sneaker that salutes the iconic baseball legend who shattered societal norms and paved the way for racial equality in sports.

Back in 1947, Jackie Robinson revolutionised Major League Baseball by becoming its first African American player. Despite facing opposition, he bulldozed through the established colour lines with resilience, eventually prominently etching his name into the chronicles of sports history.

This year, Nike introduces an Air Max 1 ’86 dressed in hues of “Midnight Navy,” “Obsidian,” “Sail,” “Metallic Gold,” and “Gum Light Brown” to commemorate Robinson’s great legacy. The sneaker also boasts an elegant mix of premium materials, including soft suede and perforated suede leather, adding a touch of luxury to this beloved model.

However, the Air Max 1 ’86 goes beyond just a beautiful colour palette inspired by the Brooklyn Dodgers or a premium selection of materials. It includes several nods towards Jackie Robinson that fans will appreciate. Specifically, the sneakers incorporate Robinson’s uniform number, 42, in two distinct locations. Firstly, it graces the tongue as an elegant navy and gold patch that mimics the shape of a baseball diamond. Secondly, it finds another home on the laces beside Nike’s famous Swoosh, as a gleaming gold lace dubrae.

In carrying on with these special details, it’s essential to highlight the shoe’s interior. The insole boasts a distinct label with “Metallic Gold” inscriptions, marking Jackie Robinson Day on April 15, 2024. This serves as a meaningful tribute to Robinson’s pioneering achievements. Furthermore, the iconic Nike profile Swooshes, complete with intricate embroidery, add a unique flourish to the design.

However, the design do not stop there. Additional elements such as eye-catching “Metallic Gold” eyelets and a matching “Nike Air” embroidered on the heel cannot go unmentioned. Finally, the finishing touch to this sneaker is a clean white midsole and a gum rubber outsole, providing a neat finish.

Of course, the packaging also adds to the celebratory touch. These sneakers come nestled inside a vintage-inspired box with an extra perk of two sets of laces complete with gold tips.

For those interested in owning this special tribute, the Nike Air Max 1 ’86 “Jackie Robinson” is set to launch on April 1, 2024. Upon its release, you can grab your pair from Nike.com and select Nike retailers in men’s sizes at $150 USD. Until then, be sure to follow us for more sneaker drops and reviews.
