By now, you’re probably well aware of Travis Scott’s numerous collaborations with Nike and Jordan Brand. Among his most iconic contributions is the Air Jordan 1 silhouette. While we can appreciate the beauty and versatility of his previous releases, there’s one AJ1 colourway that remains a dream for many: a vibrant purple rendition. Thankfully, sneaker artist John Trottier of @johnnyskicks_ brings this vision to life with a custom Travis Scott Air Jordan 1 High “Purple”, drawing inspiration from Scott’s renowned AJ4 collaboration.
The ‘Purple Suede’ AJ4s that Inspired the Design
The Nike Air Jordan 4 Retro Travis Scott’ Purple Suede’ is just an extremely beautiful sneaker. Admittedly, we’re fans of purple suede, but the hefty resale price of around $38,250 USD suggests that many share our sentiment. This sneaker’s vibrant colourway and premium materials clearly impress.
These sneakers initially caught the public eye on DJ Chase B’s feet back in 2018. The Houston-based DJ and producer showcased these kicks throughout the year, from the launch of Travis Scott’s Air Jordan 4 ‘Houston Oilers’ sneakers to casual basketball games.
Travis Scott also joined the fun, sporting the shoe at various events throughout the year, including Game 7 of the NBA Western Conference Finals in Houston. This naturally piqued the interest of sneaker enthusiasts far and wide. However, when these much-anticipated shoes finally dropped in July 2019, they were sadly limited to a friends and family release. This exclusivity has spurred the creation of custom designs inspired by the original, such as this AJ1.
A Closer Look at the Sneaker Design
Much like its muse, the Air Jordan 1 High “Purple” showcases a distinctive soft purple suede upper. Complementing the luxurious suede are tonal tumbled leather quarter panels that enhance the shoe’s sophisticated aesthetics.
Black accents, which are a hallmark of the AJ4’s design, are reinvented in this model. The shoe showcases a black collar and Nike Swoosh, offering a striking contrast to the vibrant purple. The grey waffle eyelets from the AJ4 also make a subtle return, now reimagined as a rim around the side Swooshes.
Other noteworthy details include the red Cactus Jack logo on the tongue, which we also predict will grace the right heel. Completing the look are a black midsole and rubber outsole, matched with a pair of black laces. For those who like to switch things up, alternative sets of red and pink laces are imagined for the pair. I personally think the red pair is a standout.
Overall, it’s a stunning reimagining of the rapper’s sought-after collaboration. Quite frankly, we hope Jordan Brand introduces more tonal suede sneaker releases, especially in this striking shade of purple.
