Before transferring his creative talents over to adidas, Sean Wotherspoon designed one of the most memorable sneakers of 2018 with Nike, a vintage-inspired Air Max 1/97. To this day, it remains one of the designer’s most sought-after sneaker collabs, but would the release have been as popular if Wotherspoon had opted to cover a different sneaker model in vibrant corduroy materials? Say, an Air Jordan 11 sneaker? Thanks to this custom Wotherspoon-inspired Air Jordan 11 design by John Trottier of @johnnyskicks_, you’re free to decide for yourself.
A Closer Look At The Sneaker
Much like the original Air Max design that inspired it, this AJ11 custom features a unique corduroy upper with frayed edges. This look was originally inspired by Sean’s love for vintage Nike hats from the 1980s.
You’ll likely notice that the AJ11’s iconic patent leather mudguard has been replaced with dark green velour with a brown patch of corduroy visible at the midfoot. Layers of vibrant corduroy, ranging from violet to turquoise to peach and finally light grey, are then arranged above this. But the limewash yellow corduroy that covers much of the upper section is certainly the most striking of all the colours.
Finally, a sail midsole and yellow outsole balance out all the uppers vibrant hues. Though it would have been interesting to see the design change the sole unit (like Wotherspoon did with his AM1/97 collaboration), it looks as though the colourway and details are still striking, no matter which model you choose.
