This year has seen an exciting resurgence of 90s classics in sneaker form. There’s no denying it – Dexter’s Laboratory was an absolute icon of the ’90s and early 2000s animation. The unforgettable exploits of the pint-sized prodigy and his boundless creativity left a lasting mark on many of us. For anyone who grew up watching the beloved Cartoon Network series, this collaboration is a nostalgic dream come true. To tap into the crazy adventures of the classic cartoon, the Dexter’s Laboratory x PUMA MB.03 is given a wild, psychedelic and colourful design that isn’t too far from the aesthetics Ball is known for.

The sneakers have an intriguing base design with a twirling black and white pattern, a unique reimagining of Dexter’s iconic coat and boots. This pattern is partially hidden by a vibrant, multicoloured fabric overlay teeming with abstract patterns. The overlay is cleverly adorned with numerous “scratch marks,” creating cut-out windows to the black and white design underneath.
The distinctive black-and-white scheme extends to the sneaker’s tongue, heel, and lining. It also ties in with their two-toned laces, although the shoes also come with an extra pair of pink laces. These add a touch of fun to the array of hues on the shoe’s upper and offer versatility in styling.
Leaning into the theme, the sneaker is embellished with design elements focused on science and the beloved cartoon. These include the images of beakers embossed on the tongue, along with Dexter’s Laboratory branded insoles. And the icing on the cake? The heel showcases co-branding from PUMA, Melo, and Dexter’s Laboratory.

Adding the perfect finishing touches, the sneaker sports a black midsole dotted with blue specks and a sleek black rubber outsole. Parts of the outsole extend over and up the midsole, creeping onto the upper. The underside of the shoe is marked with the word “Rare” inscribed across both shoes and accentuated with additional scratch marks on the heels. There’s no doubt this sneaker is very unique looking and will make a statement when worn.
It’s worth mentioning that Puma’s collaboration with Ball on the cartoon-themed sneakers isn’t a first for 2023. The duo kicked off the year with the launch of the Puma LaMelo Ball MB.02 Rick & Morty Adventures edition. As they seem to delve deeper into the cartoon realm, we eagerly await the next character ensemble Ball’s signature footwear will incorporate.
