There has been a lot of 90s and early 2000s nostalgia floating around when it comes to cartoons that we all enjoyed in the past inspiring sneakers and sneaker customs, but can we get some love for some older cartoons as well? These cartoons entertained generations and are still inspiring artists around the world today. Here are two pairs of Tom & Jerry Nike Dunks in “Diffused Taupe” and “Grey Gum”.
Tom & Jerry are classic pop culture icons that have been around since the 1940s. While they might not have the sway in society they once did, they are still relevant, as many of us grew up watching these two battling it out. In contrast, others are still being introduced to reruns of the classic cartoon.
Just because his name comes first in the title, let’s start with the Nike Dunk Low “Grey Gum” sneakers for Tom. Starting from the bottom, we immediately see where the “Gum” part of the name comes from, sporting a pair of classic Nike Dunk Low gum outsoles, a refreshing bit of warm colour in an otherwise grey pair of sneakers.
The rest of the sneaker is a constant change between a crisp white and grey, starting with the white midsole and moving upwards to the interchanging colours on the upper. The mudguard and most panelling throughout the upper is a light, slate grey suede, perfectly matching the fuzzy texture you would expect from Tom’s furry coat.
The white base of the sneaker is a plush white, tumbled leather, complete with the usual toe box perforations for breathability at the forefront of the sneakers. The Nike Swoosh logo is also made up of leather, this time coming in a slightly darker shade of grey to help it stand out from the grey suede on the rest of the upper.

Now let’s look at the Nike Dunk Low “Diffused Taupe” for Jerry. This pair has wholly replaced the suede elements of its counterpart with leather. Starting from the bottom, there is no plain gum outsole; instead, choosing to go with the same Taupe colour you can see throughout the rest of the sneakers’ construction.
Similarly to the Tom pair, the sneakers interchange the colourful elements with white throughout the sneakers for a colour-blocked effect, starting with contrasting the outsole with the white midsole and then repeating the same colour pattern as the other pair.

Starting with the mudguard, the lace unit, and the panelling of the upper, we see the “Diffused Taupe” blanketing the upper of the sneakers, with the white base interjecting some light into an otherwise neutral and dark pair of sneakers.
Similarly to the other pair, the Nike Swoosh logo on this pair is a comparable shade to the rest of the sneakers. Still, it is darker to help it stand out from the rest of the same-coloured elements on the other sneakers.
These sneakers might not have any direct inspiration from this character other than the inclusion of their image in the release photo by @dropsbyleo; you can’t deny that they might be onto something with the perfect cohesion of these sneakers together. It’s doubtful that they will be dropped simultaneously, but @dropsbyleo says to keep an eye out for release dates, so we will have to wait and see what happens and if Nike will market these as a matching pair.
