We have seen plenty of representations of characters from The Spider-Verse in the form of sneakers at this point, from Spider-Gwen to Spiderpunk, and while they have undoubtedly been impressive, where is the villain representation? Our excellent designer here at Fortress of Solitude took it upon himself to create a design for one of the most underestimated villains of the Spider-Verse, The Spot. Let’s explore The Spot x Air Jordan 11 sneakers without further ado.
If you have been following along with the growing Spider-Verse collection, you probably know who Spot is. Still, to jog your memory, he was a scientist at Alchemax. He is why the radioactive spider from Earth-42 managed to make its way into Miles Morales’ world and bite him, making him the reason why Brooklyn even has a Spider-Man.
Unfortunately, Spider-Man is also why Brooklyn has to contend with The Spot because his actions caused the catastrophic events that created the villain in the first place when he blew up the collider. Despite this tragic story, at the start of the film, the character is pretty adorable, working his way up to villainy as he gets underestimated further. This stunning pair of sneakers focuses on his earlier form that you can see in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
The sneakers have an elegant, subtle, and relatively simple design, perfectly emulating the character. The milky translucent outsole is a perfect choice to complement the milky white opaque midsole, which features a hint of black throughout the foot’s arch.
The sneaker’s upper is the usual patent leather for which we know and love the Air Jordan 11 silhouette. Still, it is more shiny than it usually is. It is a significant nod towards the character whose fleshy outer layer is his skin, not a suit.
Throughout the patent leather upper, you can clearly see the paint splatter-like markings of The Spot, which are both the markings all throughout his body, the Spot that has completely erased and replaced his face, and the portals that he creates in dimensional space, that he can manipulate. However, in the movie, he doesn’t fully know how to control it.
The same patent leather travels up the heel toward the ankle, replicating a tried and true Air Jordan 1 formula. The fun part of the sneaker comes in with decorative stitching over most of the upper, including the white mesh and the bands that make up the lace stays.
If you have watched Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, you might ask where the blue comes from. This stunning detail has been added by our designer, Brandon Krige, as a nod to the original concept art for the character and the blue construction lines for the art that can be seen in a couple of posters for the movie, all of which serve to give the character and the sneaker a unique appearance. As a result, we see a level of depth that couldn’t have been achieved otherwise.
While we aren’t saying that we support villainy in any way, it’s fantastic to see some of the exciting and villainous characters of the Spider-Man universe represented in a pair of sneakers. We can’t all be heroes, right?
Would you wear these The Spot x Air Jordan 11 sneakers, or do you prefer to represent the story’s heroes?
