That’s exactly what’s happening with the Virgil Abloh Archive x Air Jordan 1 High “Alaska,” which has quickly turned into one of the most talked-about sneaker launches of 2026, and maybe even the last few years. We know that it’s definitely releasing in March, but some retailers are saying March 21, while the Virgil Abloh Archive shows March 28, 2026 as the global launch date. Either way, it’s coming soon and very soon.

For those who don’t know, the Alaska is closely tied to the Off-White x Air Jordan 1’s story that dates back to a decade ago, in 2017, when Virgil Abloh unveiled “The Ten,” a collaboration with Nike that reimagined classic silhouettes. His collection basically rebuilt the Jordan collection with a unique look that included exposed foam, floating Swooshes, zip ties and industrial typography. Out of all the releases, however, the Air Jordan 1 from that collection quickly became one of the most recognizable and sought-after sneakers of the last 20 years.
The Rare 2018 “Euro” Pair That Inspired the Alaska
In 2018, a mostly white version of the Off-White x Air Jordan 1 called the “Euro” released exclusively in Europe. Most sneaker fans outside that region never had a chance to buy it at retail. Prices on the resale market shot up, sometimes landing between $1,500 and $5,700 depending on the size.
The Alaska is basically that sneaker, but with a few changes from Nike.
Why the Sneaker Now Says “V.A.A. for Nike”
One of the biggest changes is that instead of the “Off-White for Nike” text along the medial side, the Alaska now reads “V.A.A. for Nike”.
But there’s a story behind the change. See, after LVMH sold Off-White to Bluestar Alliance in 2024, Virgil Abloh’s estate officially separated from the brand. They formed The Virgil Abloh Archive in 2025 and now act as the platform for his new projects.

More than 20,000 items from Abloh’s career, including fashion, music, architecture and design, are now inside the Virgil Abloh Archive. Many pieces from the collection recently appeared in a Paris exhibition called The Codes, put together with Abloh’s wife, Shannon.
She described the mission behind the project in a statement that accompanied the launch of the Archive’s first printed book. “Virgil believed deeply in sharing knowledge and opening doors, the Archive and Foundation are my commitment to carrying that forward, making his work accessible, contextualized, and meaningful for future generations.”

Design Details of the Virgil Abloh Archive x Air Jordan 1 High “Alaska”
Visually, the Virgil Abloh Archive x Air Jordan 1 High “Alaska” keeps many of the elements that made the original Off-White Jordan 1 so popular. Everything we love is there: the exposed foam around the collar, zig-zag stitching, blue accents and the “AIR” text stamped on the midsole.
On the inside collar, a small “85” shows the year the Air Jordan 1 first launched.
The Special Packaging and Details
Even the packaging of the Virgil Abloh Archive x Air Jordan 1 High “Alaska” has been redesigned. The box now opens from the side rather than the top and features circular cutouts inspired by Abloh’s “Lot 50” Nike Dunk collection. Inside you’ll find a transparent case with V.A.A. and Jumpman logos, along with an insert and a sketch booklet stamped with the phrase “MODERNISM IS NOT NEW.”
Early unboxing videos online also show additional laces and sketches drawn by Abloh himself.
Virgil Abloh Archive Membership
Sign-ups for the Virgil Abloh Archive x Air Jordan 1 High “Alaska” release are currently open online. The site also launched a new membership program tied to the Archive and the debut of a 256 page book called The Virgil Reader Vol. 001, which shows career highlights, interviews, and essays from GQ Style, i-D, Business of Fashion and 032c.
Like the sneaker, the book will be limited – Just 2,000 copies of the first edition are being produced. To celebrate the launch of the book, the Archive scheduled a two-day event in Los Angeles from March 14 to March 15.
At the event, 100 pairs of the Virgil Abloh Archive x Air Jordan 1 High “Alaska” will be handed out to those who registered for the Archive membership program.

Some sneaker fans aren’t happy about the Virgil Abloh Archive x Air Jordan 1 ‘Alaska’. Many sneakerheads are questioning why the shoe is being released and changed.
“All I see from sneaker blogs is drop date information getting everyone ready to cop instead of challenging for further discourse. I hope this makes up for it,” sneaker commentator Sneaker Den shared online.
His point is that Virgil Abloh often approached projects with a context. And because Nike hasn’t explained why the Alaska is returning, some fans feel the release is pushing the product over the story.
The Social Media Reactions and Estimated Pair Numbers
Social media reactions are definitely interesting. One user wrote, “Oh i def need.” But another questioned the branding change, saying, “It’s not Virgil shoe it’s Nike shoe. That’s why it doesn’t have the same writing on the side and it’s missing a lot of its classic stuff from his original stuff when he actually did it.”
Others are more interested how many pairs of the sneaker is releasing. “Is it true there only releasing like 10-20k pairs?” one person asked on Instagram.
Rumors say there’ll only be 20,000 pairs globally, though that hasn’t been confirmed yet.

Other Off-White Jordan 1 models have sold between $700 and $1,400 in recent years. Sneakerheads believe the Alaska will resell somewhere between $500 and $900 shortly after release.
But retail is only $230 USD.
Expect a ton of raffles online around the release date. While it hasn’t shown up on the Nike SNKRS app yet, it’s expected to appear soon.
Off-White Controversy and What This Drop Means for Virgil Abloh’s Legacy
A recent post on socials showed Off-White hoodies being sold at Costco for around $85. The image made a lot of fans angry. One comment on Instagram read: “It’s safe to say V’s legacy is being turned into a valuepriced golden parachute for hangers on that still profit off of his legacy.”
But, of course, not everyone feels that way. Many sneaker fans just want the shoes and aren’t worried about the politics.
