Nike has been frequently dipping into its legendary archives lately, bringing back not just the timeless classics but also those elusive, ultra-exclusive gems that have fuelled our sneaker dreams for years. Up next? The near-mythical Wu-Tang x Nike Dunk High collaboration—a highly coveted release from the ’90s that has remained a grail for sneaker enthusiasts worldwide.
Wu-Tang x Nike Dunk High History
It’s been 25 years since the very exclusive release of the Wu-Tang x Nike Dunk High sneakers back in 1999, but this coveted sneaker grail will soon be swarming back onto the sneaker scene.
Just recently, a tantalising clip emerged on Nike Sportswear’s official account, showcasing the iconic Wu-Tang Dunks surrounded by a swarm of bees. And while this teaser might seem cryptic on its own, Wu-Tang Clan’s social media stories provide a link for fans to sign up for release notifications. This news is guaranteed to excite many, as these kicks have evolved into highly coveted collector’s items over the years.
With only around 100 pairs ever made, just 36 were made available to the public, paying homage to Wu-Tang Clan’s iconic album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). These highly sought-after pairs were exclusively sold at Training Camp, a famous sneaker boutique in New York City known for serving a prestigious clientele. The rest of the pairs were divided—half went to the Wu-Tang Clan members, while the other half remained with Nike.
Since their debut, obtaining a pair has been exceedingly difficult, with resale prices skyrocketing to an astonishing $50,000 USD over the years. And the desire for these Dunk Highs only intensified when Travis Scott was spotted wearing them in 2020, causing the craze for these sneakers to reach new heights. But it’s not just their scarcity or the buzz that attracts us; the design is pretty sweet too.
A Closer Look at the Sneaker
The sneaker showcases the hip-hop group’s emblematic colours, “Black” and “Goldenrod,” spread across the premium leather upper. But there are also other special nods to the Wu-Tang Clan, such as the embroidered “W” logo on the heel and tongue.
Finishing off the look is a sail midsole and yellow rubber outsole that neatly tie everything together. You have to admit that these kicks are the perfect representation of the iconic group, and it’s good to see them finally dropping after 25 years.
