When considering the sheer magnitude of Outkast’s impact on hip-hop, their uniqueness, creativity, and willingness to explore new terrains are arguably second to none. With this in mind, any sneaker design that takes inspiration from their music or their persona has the formidable task of being just as unconventional and original. Thankfully, we’ve found that assuredly in the bold and expressive Nike Air Jordan 1 “Outkast/Stankonia” sneakers crafted by Marty @drksidegrapics.

The Influence Behind the Sneaker Design

Nike Air Jordan 1 "Outkast/Stankonia"

The noughties were an incredibly distinctive period. While it may not have been too long ago, it feels like an entirely different age, captured not only by the tangible difference in lifestyle but also, unmistakably, by the music that underscored it all.

Reflecting on the music of this time, we can feel nothing short of fortunate to have experienced the wealth of lyrical brilliance and musical innovation that marked the era. Our ears were serenaded not only by legendary artists and bands who endowed that decade with their unique sounds but also by the birth and evolution of musical genres and styles, the effects of which can still be perceived among contemporary artists.

Amongst the mix was the release of Outkast’s impressive fourth studio offering—Stankonia—a pioneering album in its own right. Stankonia seamlessly interwove hip-hop, funk and rock elements, creating a sound that transcended its era.

Granted, this album may not be your number-one pick when it comes to the music of André 3000 and Big Boi; perhaps it’s not even within your top three. Yet, it’s difficult to dismiss the poetic genius of the rappers and the ground-breaking beats that supported them.

With “Ms. Jackson” securing the duo’s first-ever spot at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, the album undeniably etched its mark on the music scene. But you could tell from the striking cover art alone that Stankonia was going to be something different.

On the cover of this Grammy Award-winning album, Dre and Patton pose against a black-and-white riff on the American flag, signifying an alternative America—a realm that runs contrary to the mainstream, which is precisely what their music did. Dre termed this Stankonia.

Now, years later, guided by the visual aesthetics of the album cover, talented sneaker artist Marty—also known as @darksidegraphics—crafted this concept for a pair of Nike Air Jordan 1 “Outkast/Stankonia” sneakers. These kicks were designed as a nod to the album’s ground-breaking and daring spirit.

A fusion of black and white takes precedence over the sneaker’s design, symbolic of the album’s flag. Specifically, black and white stripes can be seen adorning the toe box, tongue, and ankle flaps, while a constellation of stars grace the toe cap and heel.

However, a splash of colour on the quarter panels and collar interrupts the shoe’s monochrome theme. This detail is inspired by the album’s alternative cover, which features an image of a woman, which, of course, you’re familiar with if you’re a fan of the album.

To prevent the vibrant designs from overwhelming the shoe’s aesthetic, several key elements have been kept clean and straightforward using pure white, namely the signature Swooshes, laces, eyestays, and inner lining. This starkly contrasts the colourful patterns and enhances their prominence, allowing them to take the spotlight.

An “Outkast” label proudly sits on the tongue to ensure the ties to the iconic hip-hop pair aren’t overlooked. From observations, it seems the designers took every opportunity to continue paying tribute to the influential duo in this sneaker’s creation.

The timeless combination of a white midsole and black outsole completes the look. In essence, the attention-grabbing mix of bold and unpredictable elements reflects the very heart of Outkast’s ‘Stankonia’ album. As such, these kicks are a bold style statement sure to be a hit among those with the same funky, adventurous spirit as the famed hip-hop pair.
