Africa is bursting with vibrant and beautiful aesthetics that make it a perfect source of inspiration for bold and eye-catching sneaker designs. In fact, Jordan Brand tapped into Africa’s rich colours and landscapes when designing their Air Jordan 1 Mid “Africa” back in 2022. Yet, we believe there’s still so much more that can be explored in weaving African culture and artistry into beautiful sneaker creations.

The continent’s bold patterns, traditional textiles, and lively colours present endless opportunities for creating distinctive and culturally significant sneaker designs that celebrate Africa’s rich heritage and creativity. To give you a helping hand in visualising just such a sneaker, we at Sneaker Fortress have crafted our very own concept of a pair of kicks that proudly embody the African essence and flair.

A Closer Look at the Sneaker Design

As a foundation for the sneaker’s design, we’ve taken inspiration from the elegant metallic silver Air Jordan 1 High G NRG, which forms part of the Golf “Gift Giving” pack that made its debut in 2023.

Now, you might be wondering: Why a silver-themed sneaker in relation to African heritage? Well, Africa is abundant in natural resources including precious metals like silver and gold which have been mined and traded for centuries. This beautiful silvery upper then symbolises the land’s immense wealth and also its potential for prosperity. Sure, gold could have represented the same concept, but the silver base perfectly balances the warm and vibrant colours that follow.

The overlays feature a vivid mix of colours and patterns inspired by traditional African textiles. What you may not know is that the geometric shapes and symbols in these fabrics tell the stories of the tribes that created them. Africa is home to over 3,000 tribes, each with its own rich cultural heritage and artistic expression. Therefore, the design’s use of these vibrant patterns and colours pays tribute to the continent’s diverse cultural tapestry.

Finally, a white midsole and transparent, icy outsoles complete the look, adding a modern flair to the traditional design. This blend of traditional African textiles with contemporary sneaker design creates a unique and striking aesthetic that pays homage to Africa’s rich history while celebrating its promising future.

How to Create Your Own Air Jordan 1 “Africa”

 Air Jordan 1 "Africa."

Though the Air Jordan 1 “Africa” is currently just a concept, the base model, the sleek and stylish metallic silver Air Jordan 1s, is available at Nike.com for $145.97 USD—a fantastic 30% savings off the original price. With a touch of creativity, you can transform these into your very own “Africa” design. Make sure to choose traditional patterns and colours that resonate with you and apply them to the overlays, or incorporate traditional cultural fabrics to customise your pair.

Alternatively, the OG Jordan 1 Mid “Africa” can be found on StockX for as little as $102 USD. In the meantime, stay tuned with us here at Sneaker Fortress for more exciting customs and concepts.
