The beloved “UNC” colourway, taking inspiration from the University of North Carolina’s colour scheme, has kept a steady presence in the Air Jordan line since its inception back in 1985. Sure, it doesn’t quite bask in the same glory as its legendary “Chicago” or “Bred” counterparts, but its distinct blend of “White” and “Powder Blue” holds its own allure. In fact, this colour palette has beautified many sought-after sneaker releases over the years, including Virgil Abloh’s take on Air Jordan 1 “UNC” sneakers. And it’s this extraordinary colourway that we find on the mesmerising “UNC” Off-White Air Jordan 1 High Lux Satin created by well-known custom sneaker artist John Trottier.

The Colour Story

“What we gonna do right here is go back. Way back. Back into time.” Well, 1985, to be exact. This is when Nike first unveiled the “UNC” colourway on their acclaimed Air Jordan 1. The striking blend of colours was a nod to Michael Jordan’s alma mater, the esteemed University of North Carolina, where he played for the Tar Heels during his college years.

Since that initial launch, the Jordan brand has consistently repurposed this iconic “UNC” colour scheme across numerous other Air Jordan models. They even extended this styling to a slew of Nike’s most sought-after models – yes, I am talking about the Dunk Low and Air Force 1. However, out of all these iterations, the one that stands out the most for me is Virgil Abloh’s distinctive spin on the Air Jordan 1 “UNC”.

I mean, just the fact that the pioneer designer, Abloh, selected the blue and white AJ1 as a base canvas for one of his 2018 creations attests to how deeply the “UNC” design has entrenched itself in sneaker culture. However, as you’d expect from Abloh, he essentially reinvented the iconic design, introducing his distinctive deconstructed style, Off-White branding, and a dash of neon orange details for good measure.

And now, Trottier advances Abloh’s design a step further, enhancing its luxury appeal with his custom touch.

The UNC AJ1 Re-Imagined…Again

The UNC Off-White Air Jordan 1 High Lux sneaker, exquisitely swathed in satin, is a striking tribute to both the collaboration between Abloh and Jordan Brand and the beloved “UNC” colourway.

The design mimics the colour blocking of its muse, but the inclusion of shiny satin fabric carrying delicate Eastern patterns gives this sneaker its unique sense of luxury. Just take a moment to appreciate the wispy cloud designs and Sayagata patterns on the shimmering material.

As you’d expect, the shoe retains all the major Off-White branding elements (barring the usual “Air” notation on the back of the sole unit). That distinct Helvetica typeface stands out on the medial side of the shoe, and the lace ends are aptly feted with “shoelaces” text. The eye-catching orange label on the swoosh also features, albeit in a deeper tone.

The aesthetic is perfectly rounded off with a crisp white midsole and a blue rubber outsole, harmonising wonderfully with the lavish satin upper.

It’s always a treat to see how sneaker designs can take classic styles and enrich them with extraordinary materials and meticulous details. Both the authentic Abloh collaboration and this custom model succeed in delivering a fresh and stunning reinterpretation of the ‘UNC’ AJ1.
