Step Into Surrealism: The Air Max 1 'Dalí' Brings Art to Life

The creations of well-known artists around the world have inspired some of the most sought-after shoe designs in Nike’s arsenal. Whether it’s the rare and pricey “Paris” Nike SB Dunks featuring the work of the French painter Bernard Buffet or the loud and colourful Nike SB Dunk Low “Piet Mondrian” with its abstract colour blocking, these pairs have proven that sneakerheads can’t resist the combination of art and sneakers. Building on this successful trend, custom shoe artist Sam van IJzendoorn (@vijzbespokes) has created a limited edition Air Max 1 featuring the works of the iconic surrealist artist Salvador Dalí.

A Closer Look At The Design

This stunning shoe is meticulously handcrafted from a silk scarf that has been printed with one of Salvador Dalí’s most well-known works, “The Persistence of Memory.” For those who are unfamiliar with this piece of art, it depicts the fluidity of moments, the relativity of time, and the complex waltz between dreams and reality through melting clocks draped over various objects in the composition.

You’ll find the shoe’s base is made of suede and draped in a silk scarf that features distinct images from the elaborate artwork, such as Dali’s marching ants at the heel and the blue melting clocks on the quarter panels. But the shoe also has other references to Dali’s artwork besides the printed images, like an embroidered melting clock-shaped tongue tag with the Vijz logo in the middle.

Finishing touches to the design include a light brown outsole and cream midsole that complement the hues of the artists original painting. So, when you consider all the elements, it really is a design that is truly one-of-a-kind, further proving that sneakers and artwork are made to go together.

How To Secure The Air Max 1 “Dalí”

Vijz’s official website offers a variety of sizes for this limited edition custom Air Max 1 “Dalí” sneaker, which retails for $2,328.23 USD. However, your custom sneakers may take up to four to six weeks to produce.

While you contemplate making this investment, you can browse through more art-inspired sneaker designs here on our site. Be sure to check out pairs like the Air Force 1 “Mondrian,” “Starry Night” Air Jordan 1, and the “Great Wave Of Kanagawa” Air Force 1 to expand your collection.
